It was alright. I kind of realized i dont like large groups. Its more of my thing to camp with a couple friends in a more spread out fashion.

it was nice to meet people that ive been talking to on Instagram for a few years though. Put faces to names

Yeah i hear you i prefer spread out as well but those events are pretty cool to meet more people and then find more places to go and see some cool setups and rigs. Expo was even worse but really diverse group of people and setups.

Too soon, we were through these distracting, colorful, Alders. Luckily it wouldn't be our last encounter with these beautiful trees, and besides, we were making our way up and around what we hoped would be another cool peak to add to our list of places we'd driven to the top of: Hahn's Peak. Visible at the top, an old lookout - no longer staffed - called to us to visit, and we made our way around the base of the mountain as we looked for a way up.

Read all about it in Redhead Down #3: We Cross into Colorado

Okay over 1000 pages to read so I'll ask first.

I have an amazing deal on a 23zero walkabout 72 coming to me. I've got Thule bars on my bed cap and a frontrunner on the cab. I think this RTT is going to be too big to run on either/or. Anyone have any input for me on this?

I would center at the best you can on the cap, leaving enough room to open the rear hatch. Whatever you do, do not mount it to both the cab and the cab. You will most likely cause damage when the frame flexes.

The tent is 160 lbs and I am 315. You think the bars can handle the static weight of 500?

Do you have a contractor or reinforced shell? The bars can hold it but i would start looking at better options to mount a roof rack to your cap. If you already have the thule tracks running the length of the shell you can build your own rack from tnuts with several crosssbars for better dispersion of the weight. I would run a minimum of 3 bars but if you weigh more run 4 - 5 depending on size of tent to maximize weight dispersion. Also get bed stiffeners from one of the vendors to help with the weight of the cap and your setup pushing out the bedsides over time.

It's just an ARE cap w/ factory installed bars. However, the static weight rating seems to be more than enough. I did read up on bed stiffeners the other day and planned on that at some point. I guess I could buy one more cross bar and slide it in the channel to disperse better. Thanks for the info..

...Of course, we all made it - Monte declaring that this was even narrower than the back side of Webster Pass - but not without a casualty. Brett had been hugging the uphill side of the trail so tightly that he'd punctured his front, driver-side tire on a rock. It wasn't severe enough that he had to change it right there on the switchbacks, but he scooted his truck up to the top while the rest of us paused for a moment to snap an #instafabulous photo or two at a top-of-the-world sort of overlook, Red Cone in the distance.

    Yeah if you have the
Yeah if you have the channels i would add more cross bars. Be aware of the height over shell and cab as it can start to get top heavy off camber. It also created more drag on trips. I opted to get it as close to shell as i could With 1-1/2 in mounting feet and cross bars so it lines up with my front prinsu front to back.

...As we all set about our normal evening activities - prepping our tents and getting the fire pit ready - Brett had something else in mind entirely. This was a site worthy of a custom bench. However, unlike many of the locations we'd been, there was relatively little beetle kill here, and so he headed off with his truck to find - and drag back - the trunk of a dead tree. And then, he set to work with the chainsaw.

Apologizes for something that has probably been covered but new guy on the block here looking to get a RTT without breaking the bank (2k and under preferred). If there is a better post out there feel free to usher me over there. Camping/light overlanding with 2 adults. Currently looking into Smittybilt XL, TuffStuff Ranger, ARB Simpson III, Tepui Explorer Autana 3 and CVT Mt. Shasta. Main points are build quality(fabric, frame and floor) and having a ladder within the annex. I am attempting to track down these models to see them in person, if you know of some smaller details that could set one apart from another if/when I see them I would appreciate it.

I would suggest the Freespirit Recreation High Country. It'll come in just under your 2k budget, but it has been a great tent to me

Anyone selling one? I don't really need a brand new one and I still don't know if I'm going to enjoy it so I'd rather start simple.
