Cool goggles. I saw a dog at the park wearing something like that to block UV light. Seems he had light sensitivity. I think they were called Rex Specs. Where/why do you use them?

Yeah, rex specs is what these are too. Draco loves riding with his head out the window, and Utah is so dang dusty I feel bad for his eyes.

When I did the mattress+topper setup, I sewed a set of fitted sheets for the mattress with some cord in the hem so I could tension it manually and a pocket to keep the topper in place. A bit of a pain in the ass to set up but it kept the topper in place perfectly and the sheets never pulled up.

Cost me about $20 at the fabric store.

Oh man, I never thought about doing a pull-string type custom fitted sheet. I like that idea. Thanks!

    Yeah.
Did it take him long to get used to them? I can't imagine my dog letting me put those on him.

So Tepui are 20% off right now... I could get an Ayer 2 for under $1000 - any reasons why I should get the Kukenam instead?

    It's me (6'0") + my girl (4'11") and a 90 lb German Shepherd.

Most people on here including myself consider the Kukenam a 2 person tent
My best advice would be box off an area the width of the tent (maybe betweeen the couch and the wall) and see how you feel about it

Kukenam without question and having lived with a 90lb German Shepherd before, you're probably going to want the annex as well so they can have their own space. You lose some of the dimensions on the long axis because it's angled so it's really only about ~76-78" usable when you're actually sleeping before you hit the doors.

The only time the Ayer makes sense is if you don't have the dynamic capacity for a larger tent. The Autana/Kukenam (identical other than the overhang) are already only as wide as a full and the Ayer is 8" narrower than that. It's good for one person and a dog or two people if you like to spoon but there's no way you'll fit two and a large dog unless you sleep all over each other.

Unless you really, really want the covered ladder, the Kukenam annex is better IMO. The overhang on the Autana blocks airflow in the summer and water will pool on top when it rains. It also adds an extra frame pole and fabric that take up a lot of interior space when folding it up. I can get a lot more bedding in there now with the Kukenam than when I had the Autana.

I was going stir crazy... and knowing that @mrs.turbodb would be unable to resist a trip back to the Alvord Desert - and for our first time, Steens Mountain - I knew that would be our destination.

It'd be a relatively short trip - four days total - but I figured that even at that, we could do a couple things we'd wanted to do for quite some time:
    1. We could get to the top of Steens Mountain, which on every previous trip has been covered in snow. The highest road in Oregon, this is something we've wanted to do for years, since we first saw it while visiting the Malheur Refuge. In fact, @mrs.turbodb mentions Steens so often that it's become a running joke.
    2. We could make another run at Big Sand Gap on the east side of the Alvord Playa. Because we had a score to settle from our last attempt. Not that we're hard-headed or anything.
So, it was in the very early morning hours of October 10, 2019 that we piled into the Tacoma and headed south...

Hoping to catch the stars as they danced through the sky, you may recall that I'd setup the camera to take as many 30 second exposures as it could, until its battery ran out, through the cold night. As morning rolled around, I grabbed a second camera battery and popped out of the tent into the 21°F weather to take a look.

...Only to discover that my second batter was also dead! Eventually though, I got the battery charged and I finally had a chance to check out the previous nights display. Not. Too. Shabby. At all.
