I have the 18" (full height) rack with a Tepui Ayer 2. Its a bit of a drag having the tent up above the roof (see what I did there :D). But, its super awesome to be able to crawl up into the bed and get stuff, move stuff around, etc.. Where you have a larger heavier tent, you may see more advantages of having the CoG lower. But some food for thought. Also I think the tonneau cover brackets are about 2.5" extra height

I know it's been a few weeks but if you have any interest in a very lightly used ruggedized Kukenam 3 and an RCI bed rack, I'm selling mine $2k for the package. Going back to a ground tent for the time being because I want a cap and the RTT doesn't remotely clear my building's garage once I get it up that high.

That is one of the tents I am considering and a great price for the package. Currently I'm pretty set on the Autana (extended cover for ladder), and want to custom fab a rack. If you can do a crazy deal on the tent alone i may be interested.

Just a heads-up on the Autana, make sure it's what you want before you buy. I returned mine for the Kukenam because the overhang collected rain (like a literal pool on top that soaked through the fly and drenched the tent fabric) and it was much more a pain to set up and take down. The overhang has to tuck into the same space as you have with the Kukenam so you lose a bunch of space on that side for storing stuff inside the tent. I can get my Kukenam down in a couple minutes but with the Autana there's much more of a conscious effort when tearing down in how you tuck the fabric in.

It's good if you want the annex to have some private space that includes the ladder but if you don't intend to set it up most of the time, it's not worth it IMO.

I could probably do like $1500 on the tent but not sure I want to go much less without getting rid of the rack too. Just a heads-up though, I'm not sure i have all the mounting hardware because I flat-mount it through the bars on my rack. I have the inserts for the rails but I'll have to check if I can find the parts you'd need to mount to some round bars or something.

Now, as I previously mentioned, our first destination was the Colosseum Mine - high in the Clark Mountains - where we'd have lunch before dropping down the other side into Alaska Hills. However, as we neared the mountains, we were pretty sure that those plans were about to change.

Read all about it in Mojave Redemption - #2 - Should We Turn Around and Go Home?

I recently picked up a Smitty built tent and am in need of 4 additional window rods. Smitty wants $17 per pair. Ive seen other manufactures with similar looking window rods for sale for significantly less money. Does anyone know if they are universal? Or what another option might be?

    TIA

The rtt is gonna be opening toward the tailgate now for 2020. The height of the rtt on the FRO bed rack off of the DB cover allows an open rtt to still clear the bikes on the Yakima Dr. Tray, which also still allows for the tailgate to open all the way while the bikes are mounted on the bike rack.

I’ve been using the Front Runner Outfitters tall rtt mounts on the bed rack with their tall legs and the setup is still low enough to fit under a garage with a 6’8” height clearance. The rtt is a Tepui Ayer 2 and is 11” tall when packed. It sits about level with the gun case I have mounted on the FRO lo-pro roof rack.

I've had low and mid height bed bars in my history. Check out some links from my thread:

Low height Mid height (FYI - tent was stuffed to the brim with 0 degree bag for mid height pics)

I like the idea of the tent opening to the back and is what I do. Gives an awning to the tailgate which is used as a work station or kitchen. I'm just looking to snag a cheap 180 awning to put along side of the tent and make it like a faux 270 setup.

...We had three stops planned here, but our first stop along this route was not for a cinder cone at all - rather, it was for a lava tube that's been made accessible for exploration with the installation of a metal ladder that ushers curious hikers down into the depths of the earth...

Lots of dollars and no sense...
The best way to do this, is to get a set of airbags in the rear. That way you can customize your rear ride height depending on your load. If you stack up some AAL and have an empty bed you got a sweet rake. Load it down with a bunch of party camp gear, bikes, coolers, cold ones and all that good stuff.. you'll sag again. But with bags you can put the load level exactly. Said you're not wheeling but I'd recommend looking at some daystar cradles just because it's a couple extra bucks(60 or so) and then no worries when it goes into the shop and up on a lift. Check out the firestone ride rites. LOVE EM! There is a whole forum on here dedicated to them. Hope you didn't pull the trigger on the AAL yet.

    Cheers!

Nice, man. I hope the 180 awning combined with that rtt works out for you. I’m not sure how our rtt will work as an awning; it’s too low for us to stand under. But, we can sit under it. Maybe, it can be a useful space for tinkering with or cleaning gear on the tailgate while the rtt is deployed. We’ll see.

Some of the things I like about having the rtt open toward the back is that it’s easier for reaching the rtt cover zipper, the rtt cover straps and the awning rods. That means less climbing onto the bed tonneau cover is needed, which leads to a quicker setup time and is less tiring. It’s also equidistant from both the driver’s and passenger’s side of the truck. Also, if there’s danger or an issue with going out the rtt front door to the ladder, the rear door can lead us out to the bed tonneau cover instead of an “over the ledge” situation if the rtt opened up to the left or right sides.

Looks like I’m joining you alls group of owners. Anyone have anything I should know about the smitty overlander ? The reason for me looking at that specific one is the mainly the price and the size. I’ve been told to stay away from them but then I’ve been told how much people love them. No real validation from both ends. We are selling our travel trailer and looking more for going towards the rtt. I can’t justify paying 4K a year for a trailer that gets used once a year and would really like more possibilities of going off the paved and gravel roads which we can’t do with a 4000# trailer behind us

I've had mine for nearly 3 years now and with a ton of use, still going strong. I would recommend in ditching the supplied hardware (nuts and bolts) and provide your own.

...While on the Ring Loop hike, we'd spotted an ideal spot for camping just to the south of Hole in the Wall, and we made our way that direction so we could get setup and start dinner before the sun set completely. It was perfect timing as it turned out, a break in the clouds along the horizon providing an amazing show for us as the sun lit the sky from below. Combined with the snow-capped mountains, and tasty grilled hot dogs, it was a great way to...
