In 1985 I was picking up one of our service trucks from the local Chevrolet dealer and they had dropped a customers 1963 Corvette off of a lift and it flipped upside down. When I left they were shaking the keys to a new Corvette in the owners face and offering him some $$ to go along with the deal. He was raising more hell than a pet Monkey when I decided to leave. Not sure how that one turned out.

1: GO BIG OP! Swing for the fences on this one. Warranty out the freaking wazzoo if the truck feels good and looks good when you finally pick it up. If it doesn't pass muster make that known and bear down on them, hard.

2: Sign NOTHING / don't take it back into your possession until you do a thorough test drive and/or have left it at the shop of your choosing to have it gone over.

3: Again, SIGN NOTHING if you're not satisfied. Sadly this is when you'll have to lawyer up pal.

4: Most importantly stay cool. Don't let them see any anger or emotion.

    Good luck.

Wow that totally blows. Hope he didn't take that deal, 1985 Corvettes still suck and 1963 Corvettes are still great lol.

Since it looked like such a hard fall, I doubt the truck will run as it did prior to you bringing it in even after they fix it. I would push for a new truck if possible.

Yeah, this subject has really intrigued me, so I couldn’t wait.
NADA value. So if you don’t mind financing the remaining balance on a newer Tacoma, it may work out, depending on what the value of your truck is.

So I read the first couple pages if this and the majority of people seem to be saying to get a new truck. I'm going to echo this, and the dealership should have no problem giving you one.

Here's why. The kind of accident that took place is a mishap that could have led to loss of life, and could only have happened as a result of negligence on their part. A big whoopsie. For this reason, a court of law would definitely side with you when it comes to reimbursing you for the truck in some way. And Toyota corporate would agree I'm sure. So it's really a matter of negotiating how MUCH you'll get reimbursed.

I hope they don't know that you're going to Europe. If they got ANY wind of that they could try and delay.

Press for them to give you an answer immediately on an offer of reimbursement. Negotiations must start now or they will continue to delay. Make the offer of a new truck minus the after market upgrades you've done to it. If they refuse or try and low ball you, tell them you'll have it towed to another shop (do not drive it. You are unsure of it's safety to drive and you can include the cost of the tow as part of what you negotiate they owe you, but don't take it far and out of the way, just the next closest reputable mechanic, or next closest Toyota dealership) for a second opinion.

If they continue to delay speak to the manager and tell them that "you have acted in good faith and done your due diligence but now need a response." And then get his card and email him/her the same thing for the record, use that verbage. Email is important for documentation. Make sure you include a timeline of events in the email. Likely will get solved before it gets to this point, but having it escalate this far allows you to take the email chain to Toyota corporate or take them to court if you like, but corporate will hopefully hook you up once they see the situation.

That's my two cents. Hope it helps and sorry about your truck :(

you can't be left holding the bag over this. I wouldn't tolerate any BS from them considering the gravity of the error and the effect on you.

You said they keep delaying you getting it back , I'm thinking they found way more damage than a couple fenders and a hood . The can be dirty , the other damage they found they are not even going to tell you about . Just a patched up untrustworthy truck now .

Yea I kinda wished I had stuck around for the owners final decision but I was on the clock so I had to go. But from what I seen he was not having the idea of a 1985 to replace his sweet looking 1963.

    Lots of good advice here.
Again keep calm, let them know you’ve had some time to think about the incident and talked to some other folks. While you appreciate everything they have done, you have no guarantee that their mistake won’t create future issues. Unless they will put in writing that they will cover any future issue that may be a result of their error you would rather not assume the risk. Tell them you don’t feel their solution returns the vehicle in the same condition you entrusted it to them in. Ask them what they are willing to do to make you satisfied. Then get everything in writing.

Transmission issues have placed some of our trucks under TSB's and other warranty issues. Also with transfercase leaks and timing cover leaks.

I'd be telling the dealer they own the truck now and get out their checkbook.

    actually it's not.

even if it's under warranty for the next 300,000 miles - taking a vehicle in for constant repairs is a MAJOR HASSLE. Even if covered. Your time is valuable. Tell them they bought the MF - offer you a deal you can't resist, or lawyer up.
