Hey guys, I can't read all these pages and in the pages I have read I can't find any 255/85/16 size tires other than cooper st maxx. Are there any others? I'm hoping to find AT options, I know there are a couple mud tires but my truck is 4x2 and I just don't need mud terrains. Thanks.

By the way I may end up with st maxx, I just want to know if there are options and I'm a little worried about the right pull I read about with the coopers.

The only ATs I could find were the ST Maxxs, more options in the on-road tread pattern in that size.

Just thought i’d leave this here. Realized at work that the feds apparently use skinnies on their wildland fire tucks

(They also use generic cheap tire brands)

I'm running 255/85/16 Toyo M/T's on a 2009 DCSB with OME 4" lift and Dakar springs on the rear.

This picture was the cleanest they will ever be. New tires on new wheels.

    Ok, question for you all.

I see Cooper makes the S/T Maxx in two nearly identical sizes for the 16" wheel.

They are the 255/85r16 and 285/75r16.

    Let's compare.

    Screenshot_20191214-215924_Chrome.jpg

    Screenshot_20191214-220134_Chrome.jpg

So the obvious differences are the width. The 285 is going to be close to 1.2" wider than the 255. Also the 255 has .4" more sidewall.

Of course those dimensions are based on different wheel widths, so the differences are not going to be that cut and dry.

The load capacity is also close. 3415lbs vs 3470lbs, 255 vs 285. Negligible.

About the only real difference is the price, sidewall lettering type and weight.

Seems the 255 is $55 cheaper per tire (using DTD as a source)

    White vs black.

8 lbs less per tire for the 255. (This is odd to me)

So again, which is the better size for a 2019 Pro that is on road more than off, and rock crawling the least amount of anything?

    Thanks.
    Rob

Weight makes a big difference here, and the majority of tire weight resides in the thicker tread section. And then there is the obvious rim width...this is the "Pizza Cutter" thread so no need for a 10" rim, correct?
Edit: Also...that width may require more of the "trimming/Bending/crimping/chopping/UCAs we're trying to avoid, no?

That's what I was calculating in my noggin too. 1" wider tread has to account for some added weight. However I was also thinking about the shorter sidewall.

These are going on 7" wide, 13mm offset OEM Pro wheels. So maybe that's the deciding factor. The 285s have a wheel width range of 7" - 10". That could be an issue airing down to extreme lower PSI ranges. The 255 does offer the taller sidewall too. I like that for the potholes I encounter on my commute to the city.

Thanks for making me think about it J .

I’ve heard the 3rd gen pro can get away with 285 on stock wheels, but you should be prepared to cut bits off your truck if it rubs.

people go with 255 because you get a 33” tire (and associated ground clearance) without having to do any cutting.

They can sometimes be lighter and have less rolling resistance which improves performance and fuel economy, but not always. (Mine measure out at 33.4 tall and weigh 59 pounds, so still pretty heavy)
