Put the Baja Boss AT through some trails last weekend in southern Utah. Did awesome in the sand and slick rock. Then through a knarly mud test tonight to pull someone out. Aired down to 15psi pulled through no issues. Had easier time in deep nasty mud than on the slicked out hard pack; that was like ice. Just had to spin em a bit to clear and easy peasy.

After agonizing for over a year, finally went skinny and could not be happier…
    255/85 r16 KM3’s
Little over 2” lift & zero rubbing offroad. Bent the spare tabs up with a floor jack & short length of pipe & spare fits just fine. Much better ride aired down offroad than the 265/75 ko2’s…

I’ve been going in circles on this as well. Been debating on Falken 265/75/r16 or maxxis bighorn 255/85/r16. Currently have stock lift and tires on TRD off-road, but gonna upgrade to bilstein 6112/5160 once it’s back in stock.

Those two tires aren't comparable... the Falken will drive much better than the Maxxis mud tires and last longer. Find a better 255!

I know the maxxis tires are a lot cheaper than other 255’s I’ve looked at, but hadn’t heard they are bad. What makes them worse?

The Maxxis is an old school traditional mud terrain style tire, it will perform great in some slicker off road areas without a doubt but that’s about the only strength. If you want a mud tire go Toyo, Falken or BFG in this size. An AT will be smoother, longer lasting, quieter, better on wet or snowy roads. If you’re on the fence if you want AT or MT tue Cooper ST Maxx are a nice middle ground. I have run the ST Maxx, Toyo MT and Falken AT3W. The Toyo is the tallest of the 255’s also at 33.5 vs the ST Maxx at 32.8. Hopefully this doesn’t make your decision more difficult!

Now I'm spinning in circles faster.. ha ha. I'm new to off-roading, got a 2021 TRD Off-road last December. Been having fun reading the threads and learning. I live in San Diego area and have mostly just done dirt roads and desert (Anza Borrego), and hope to get into the snow more in the winter. I also use the Tacoma as my daily driver, so looking for something well rounded I guess, not a mud tire specifically as that's probably the least likely terrain I'll be doing.

It’s crazy that I still have Chris Scott’s original white paper on tire size and skinny vs wide.

So stoked on my 255/80/17 Toyo AT3s. It's been a thousand miles and they are great. Haven't taken them on dirt yet but I will soon. I had slight rubbing when reversing on inner fender liners, I just squeezed them away from the tires a bit by hand, no longer rubs in that spot. Teeny tiny bit of rubbing in the rear of the wheel well, that's gone after alignment. I have SPC UCAs so we had plenty of play. Love that these are just around 50lbs for eload... other options were much more weight. here's the specs on my alignment

Thanks again everyone for all the tips and recommendations on skinnies. they don't even look that skinny

I just installed Eibach pro kit on 1st clip, spc uca, icon progressive leaf. Still on 265/75/16, going to 255/80/17 considering toyo at3 still looking at wheels. Shop did alignment said they shoot for 4-5 ? My stearing wheel is little off. Probably go to another shop that specializes in off road vehicles, they said they do.. was gonna wait till i get new wheels an tires. 20210810_122043.jpg
