Great thread and pictures. I'll be on the Lolo trail next month, assuming the snow is cleared enough. After seeing your pictures I'm even more excited.

 

Lolo is usually not accessible until July.

There is actually only a few miles I'll use on the actual Lolo trail. I'll mostly be using 107 and 566. If it's not driveable I'll walk. I plan to spend 10 days solo in the area either sleeping in a tent or the back of my truck.

 

Sounds like quite the adventure. Have you been back in there before?

I know both of those roads connect to the 500 road (lolo motorway) but I've never driven either Doe Creek or Gravey Creek roads when I've been in the area.

I have no idea of of how hard a winter they had up there this year but if it is anything like past years, you'll be on foot or snowmobille in May.

 

My goal is to make thee day trips from the truck. Depending on how far and where I can drive, I'll adjust. I have no real plans or goals or even a set timeframe. I'm off work from May 9th to the 29th and will stay as long or as short as I feel. I plan to get there on the 15th and pretty much wing it. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Lower elevations have had much lower than normal snowpack while upper elevations are only slightly below normal up here. You'll be able to get a good start into some areas and have to ski or snowshoe from there. I wouldn't plan on just plain walking very much in the spring snow. If night time temps aren't much below freezing there won't be any walking at all, and afternoon walking can be plain miserable. The snow has been really slushy. You start out walking thinking "this isn't so bad", but sinking to your knee every 5th step (or more) gets old real fast. If the rot runs deep, you'll sink to your nuts and flounder the whole way.

All I can say is, holy cow. As someone born and raised in south Louisiana, where it's flatter than a pancake, this thread blew my mind. This is the type of trip I've been dreaming about all my life and hopefully I'll be able to take my wife and son on sometime soon.

This was an Amazing journey. Thanks so much for sharing it. I've never really been offroading but I would love to give it a try. Sadly there's nowhere nearby (Hampton Roads VA) where I can legally offroad. Maybe one day.
