Haven't been on TW long, but this easily one of my favorite reads. The adventure you have documented so far has literally made my last two days. Props!!

That is not true. You can use a cheap tablet or an old phone to save the maps to, then connect it to your radio and it will populate the map with the tracks it receives. At least this is true with APRS, not 100% sure about DPRS (damn icom propitiatory shit).

I have a GPS unit plugged into my handheld and it send and receives aprs. Any signal it receives, it loads on the GPS unit's screen. Also, my handheld stores the APRS info for each contact, it shows me distance and direction from my location. You can also send text messages back and forth between APRS radios. So you could have updated them, visa-versa, with location and game plan.

In all seriousness, you may want to consider getting rid of the icoms and getting something like the Kenwood 710G (it has a built in GPS unit). Or, like I have, the Kenwood D72A Handheld. take an old adroid phone and you can connect it to the handheld.

Or, even cheaper, get an TNC unit and plug into into a phone with the maps. Does the same thing.

Edit: After a little digging, there is a way to setup your radio to do APRS and not D-PRS. You may want to look into this. APRS does not require a D-Star repeater to get your info to the Internet. Also it will send it to any other APRS connected device. Setup you HT for APRS with the TNC while on walkabout and be able to track that HT from camp.

Nah we love the Dstar stuff. No getting rid of the 4 radios we have now haha we have 5100a's so we can connect them to pcs/tablets ect. We just haven't gotten that far. Haven't even had them 4 months at that point. Still pretty new to the whole thing. I wouldn't be suprised if you could do what you said with the tablet idea. But i have no idea.

I know we can still transmit aprs stuff with the dprs.

But not totally sure. My Dad is the main HAM guru between the two of us.

See my edit. D-Star is nice if the infostructure is there. But APRS is better for tracking and search and rescue people (you have a track record that may require it). APRS doesn't require everyone to have a DSTAR radio (small % do).

yea i knew there was a way. We will be doing it more often. While i am out east there is tons of Dstar stuff so we have been messing with that. Considering there are only two Dstar repeaters in Wy we will look into the APRS stuff a lot more. It is very handy and useful.

I am planning on getting a small, cheap APRS tracker for my dog.

Yea i'll have to double post i think. I just don't like doing that. It also make proof reading a pain as i use Safari's Reader to preview the post with all the images.

I'll survive. Wait will be over soon.
