The problem in the auto industry is mechanics are constantly getting shit on for retarded reasons, they have to fight for the proper labor times, make sure the service manager isn’t cutting their time. Mechanics get burned out of this shit, myself included.

Very sad, probably true but very very sad. :(

That along with not being able to drive a standard shift.

The one that pisses me off most is when you ask a full grown man what engine size he has or ask where the wheel lock key is, they look at you like you just landed here in a UFO

In theory, that sounds reasonable. In reality, there are always scabs that will cross the picket line and take that money...

That's the whole point about flat rate. I do get paid more for being more valuable.

That’s what a lot of people don’t understand about flat rate. I was doing a starter that called for 2.0 hours and I finished it in 35 min and the lady was mad because I only did 35 min of labor but we charged her for 2. All I said is “ if I worked on it for 9 hours, would you pay me the additional 7?”

I would absolutely love to learn how to drive manual, I know the process pretty well in theory but I don't have a car to try it in :/

But there's no guarantee that for every job it will work out perfectly and your favor.

So when my buddy that I was talking about was in California, one of the two places he was working for was some kind of a cable company that work for Comcast. They went to install the cable service that Comcast sold.
The basic tier 1 pay was 20 bucks. But depending on what the customer wanted it could literally take anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 to 8 hours. And you have to do it, if you didn't you were fired. So very rarely did my buddy ever get jobs that worked out perfectly. there was always some kind of a problem or some kind of a messed up cable, or customers who wanted an outlet in a ridiculous spot. He's climbing up into nasty old attic, crawling through muddy crawl spaces. All for basically almost no money.

So yeah piece-rate can sometimes work out in your favor but almost always it's going to work out in favor for the business. That's why I my opinion this kind of pay rate shouldn't even exist because it's just going to be abused.

Making manual transmissions mandatory would cut down on texting and driving

I also write my own service, which gives me the ability to estimate my own work and avoid risky jobs where I might get hosed..

I hear ya about your buddy though. The guy who determines how much he gets paid per job is probably hundreds of miles away in an office building

alright well that's a much better sounding a different story if you get control over it like that! So yeah I can see how that wouldn't be too bad most of the time.

Haha man I have a cousin that used to drive an older Honda with a standard, back when the Sidekick spin around flip phones where around, he'd be driving, texting and have a fountain drink in his hands all while shifting gears. That being said it is my opinion that the manual transmission won't take the idiot out of the man. xD
