This may or may not affect you, but it's true in California...

I got a moving violation in Nov 2009 (79 mph in a 65 zone). In the middle of the desert in Kern County. I was not eligible for traffic school so I paid the fine since the court was over 100 miles away from my home.

The ticket cost $168.00 which was paid to the court.

The violation counts as one point on my driving record. When I got my insurance renewal I nearly fell out of my chair. My rate went up 55%! about $441.00. After speaking with my insurance carrier, the point will stay on my driving record for 3 years. So the true cost of a 1-point record is this:
    $168 ticket + 3 years x $441 increase in insurance = $1491

There you have it folks... The true cost of a point on the old driving record.

I got a ticket in Nov 2008 so I was not eligible for traffic school. In Calif. the tickets have to be 18 months apart to qualify for traffic school.

In retrospect, I should have driven the 100 miles to Kern County to fight it. :(

So in California if you pay the fine you are considered guilty of the violation?

In Texas, there is one called "NO CONTEST". You may pay to avoid the hassle but it will not appear in your record.

Not quite. If you simply mail in your ticket, the violation goes on your driving record. You have two options to keep it off of your record. One is to take a driving class. You have to show that you completed and passed the course, an the violation is dismissed. You cannot take another class for one year.

The second option is the deferred adjudification. You have to show up in person, request the deferred adjudification, and cannot get another ticket for three months. If you do, BOTH tickets go on your record.

If you have a CDL license, these options are not available to you.

I would rather spend the money on a lawyer. Any good lawyer can get speeding tickets off for just a fine and no points.

Back in my younger days I had a lot of moving violations on the bike and car. Had the lawyer on speed dial with a set $350 fee plus whatever the ticket ended up costing. Insurance has never gone up:cool:

I think you are right. Taking the driving class will reduce the cost and the violation is dismissed. While if you pay but plead no contest, it will appear on record but that record will be not be admissible in the court in case of a lawsuit against you.

You can thank the low-life loser cops for that. It's sad with everything going on in this country and the majority of traffic security guards(cops), are all sitting on the side of the road telling people that they're going too fast.
