Welllllll my dad handed his old truck down to me when I was 15 but all the mods I've paid for myself...which would be enough to buy a decent used 2nd gen Tacoma or you could say I spent more on this truck than what it cost to buy it

When time comes for a beater, I'll be paying for it.

Not if anyone else paid for it, with the intention of not getting it back (not a loan).

I used to think the kids that had everything handed to them were lucky...

Now I'm older, and realize those kids will never be able to make it in the real world...

This is the first vehicle I've ever purchased. Got it in '08, financed. Still payin for the damned thing, but it does feel good knowing that I paid for it - with money I earned.

My parents never handed me anything... I can look back and feel grateful about it now :D.

I guess all that counts is financial responsibility. I never got a car given to me and I attribute my current responsibility partially to that... BUT, if I had been given a car, would I be different? Maybe; maybe not.
I'm 38, with my only debt being a mortgage, so here's my $.02 to the twenty somethings... Try to never borrow money. If you have to, make damn sure the rate is low, and the payment much less than you can ACTUALLY afford. Pay it off early, keep your credit score high, and make sure you are living below your means... Which means, there is money LEFT IN THE BANK ACCOUNT at the end of the month when all the bills are paid. I have seen far too many people broke simply because they have EVERYTHING on monthly payment and pay HUGE amounts of interest!!!
Buy used. look for good deals, SAVE instead of buying.
F, I've owned 38 vehicles since I was 21. Most were POS, that I fixed up while I drove and resold for a break even or a small profit. I never had a new vehicle until I was 26 and got that at .9% finance due to a credit score of 790...

    Stepping off soap box now...

I think the information here might be a little off unless I am completely wrong. While alot of us might have 'bought' our trucks ourselves, i am 99% sure one of the two following situations applies to you.

    1) Your parents helped pay for your college or other schooling so that you had no debt or very little at the time you purchased your truck.

    2) The term 'bought' is used loosely. Putting nearly nothing down on your truck or getting a 6 year loan is not buying, it is being taken advantage of by the bank because you wanted something way out of your grasp but said F it and went ahead with it.

To those that the above 2 statements dont apply for, you my friend are doing very well for yourself.

    Good points.

    1) I'm on a sholarship at UNM so thankfully I've only had to pay for my books, and a small portion of tuition. (But they were indeed paid by me...)

    2) Bought my truck in full with cash the day I drove it home. 1ST GEN FTW!!!!! :D

I bought mine when I was 21 and paid it off when I was 23. Saved all my money and then bought a house when I was 23-24.

I was still living at home going to college and had a really good job throughout school part time and then after I graduated got hired full time.

It's all about saving. I was so amped to move out of my parents when I was 18, but my dad was like..hey we aren't kicking you out so why do you want to move out so bad? Freedom obviously, but I am so glad I took his advice. He just said save for a few years and you will be much happier. I still had to help pay some utilities living at home, but nowhere close to what I'd been paying if I had moved out and had to rent a place.

Im also really tired of seeing kids that don't pay for their own stuff. Bought my truck last year when I was 21. I work 30 hours a week and take 16-18 credits a semester.
