a Kilo is a diesel sub, pretty sure it was another Alfa. The sub that had a reactor incident and the only survivor was a cook was definitely a nuc boat. And another thing about the movie vs book, the RO friggin RAMMED Tupolev's boat at the end after taking a torp in the side.

I was a huge Clancy fan for many years. Red Storm Rising will ALWAYS be my favorite of his books.

When I was stationed at NTC/Ft. Irwin in the late 80's, he was just getting famous... he actually was invited to visit NTC. He was hosted at the Officer's Club, and did a meet & greet / book signing that was open to everyone on base, even us peons (I was an E2). Naturally by the time I was able to get back to the main base where the O CLub is located, his meet & greet was over. So I came -><- close to meeting a celebrity.......

Interesting place. I was at Ft Ord in the late 80's and did a few rotations at Irwin. Blazing hot in the day, freezing cold at night.

The movie was actually based on a short story by Arthur C. Clarke called "The Sentinel". When the movie was filmed, Clarke fleshed out the short story into a novel.

My section NCO and I had been scheduled to drive to Ord for a couple days, a few different times, for some training activities, but it never happened.

I have family that lived inland a little from Ord (Prunedale), and after I got out out, I would visit them once in a while, and I'd go to the PX at Ord. Now, if course, DoD gave the land to the State, and they built a California State University on the base. Specializing in Marine Biology (imagine that ;) )

Ah, Prunetucky. I grew up in the Salinas area, lived in Monterey for a while (before and after the Army). I remember when they were making the deal to put a Cal State there after the base closed. One of the names for consideration was Cal State Ft Ord, but it lost out because Cal State Monterey Bay apparently sounds better. I like university Ft Ord, or UFO!

My cousins lived right off 101 & Pesante Rd from about '73 until around 2010, when their oldest daughter and her hubby moved over to the Visalia area. Once their youngest was off to college, they moved over to Visalia as well.

If you can't afford the gas prices then just buy an electric car.

My wife and I signed escrow docs on Wednesday night for a home in KY. We ended up at 7.1%. House we sold in CA in September had been at 3.6%. We had only been in that place for 3 years, so didn't have much equity when we sold, just enough to cover our move to KY and pay the damn VA funding fees on this new place. Sure as hell not in any position to have paid cash. Would have been nice, though. Not too likely I'll still be working at 85 years of age to eventually pay off this mortgage.
