Never put much thought into commercial bathroom design until I was at a local restaurant tonight. All in all, not much they could do to make it better.

Metal grates with a drain beneath the urinals. Toilet stalls with solid walls and a door. A little LED light on each one, red for occupied, green for unoccupied.




Communal wash station between the bathrooms, open obliquely to the restaurant. People can see you come out and know if you don't wash your hands. Go into an airport bathroom after a plane lands, when 30 of 40 people go in, and watch how many people don't wash. Nasty. With this design, problem mostly solved

Visited friends and family last weekend and brought back a late 60's Zenith mid century modern console stereo. My dad gave this to my mom as a wedding present. It's been sitting in their garage, covered, for decades. I just did an initial clean then fired it up. Stereo works and sounds pretty good, but I'm getting a hum from the record player and no spinny. The reel to reel doesn't appear to be working either. No lights or anything. I need to pull the back cover off it and check the vacuum tubes, power cord and everything else. The other components are solid state.

 

I can smell those pictures…walnut and ozone.

On a 10 scale of jealosy I’m rocking a solid 13.

It's funny because it's true. It has a smell of nostalgia. Funny how a smell can do that. It reminded me when I found a library card catalog on craigslist. As soon as I opened one of the drawers I smelled school library, a trip in the wayback machine.

 

I loved the smell of our old Hi-Fi - ozone and lemon Pledge. Mom kept that thing waxed to an immaculate gloss.

Wanted to play a record? Turn it on and wait 10 minutes. The smell of the tubes warming up was like electronic sex to 10 year-old me, but worth the wait to play 40 Funky Hits, Frampton Comes Alive, or an original pressing of Switched On Bach…all of which I have digitally now but don’t sound the same.

 

Wait til you smell rotting potatoes...

You won't call it nostalgic

 

What the fuck happened in YOUR childhood?

 

Thankfully it didn't smell like rotten potatoes. Not sure why it would?
