    Back in the 70's and early 80's, there was a similar race in the CA Mojave desert, right off highway 15. There was a loop, maybe 40ish miles long, between Victorville and Barstow. Every summer, on July 4th weekend, they held a race, it was called the Firecracker 400, if I recall correctly. It had 3 classes of vehicles: Motorcycles, "cars", and trucks. The race ran all day, from around 8AM until the last competitors crossed the finish line. You could literally drive, stop, and watch anywhere along the track, as long as you didn't cross the "safety" zone and get within something like 50' of the actual track. That was pure insanity, and one hell of a lot of fun to watch. Except for the 115*F or higher temps......
