    24/7/365 operations. The crew complement has to be structured around 24-hour ops, so the "ship's day" is relative and unrelated to planetary time.

    What's a failure in imagination is that we never see the Enterprise entering orbit around Tau Ceti IV during third shift when Lt Snuffy has the conn.

    So there is a Time Lord Officer. Great. But when you warp across several parsecs and the you beam down to a planet at whatever time and you have a critical engagement with aliens but you are already on double time pay and no one can replace you, the Timelord does what? Not to mention the payroll nightmare...
