My 2000 cherokee did it as well, feels exactly the same as the Tacoma. Lurch when the AC clutch engages.

Mine does it too. Better have a firm foot on the brake when in the drive through!!! Come on Toyota you can do better than this.

AC hardly ever kicks off around here, not with me in it, not gonna let that happen. So I never noticed it but I thought all cars did that. Idle goes up slightly so car wants to start moving. Some more so than others.

Was your 2.7 an automatic, or a standard?
Every automatic I've ever owned or driven has done it, because you leave it in drive at a stoplight and therefore when the AC compressor kicks on and the engine revs increase slightly, it transfers some additional torque to the transmission and causing the truck to lurch.
No manual transmission does it, because you push the clutch in and therefore completely disengage the engine from the transmission.

Even if it was exclusive to the Toyota's, it wouldn't be related to the AC compressor (unless it was a constantly engaged compressor instead of the clutched design that every automaker uses). It'd be related to the torque converter design, since that's what transmits the power from the engine.

fully armored, 4.88, 33 skinnies, tundra brakes, a REAL cold air intake.
your ac compressor is actually a torque multiplier, so your brakes have a harder time holding on

My 2006 PreRunner did it pretty hard, I either don't notice it as much or my 2014 doesn't do it near as bad, but it's still there.

This is completely normal. Many cars and trucks do this. My 2001 Dodge Dakota did.

When the AC compressor clutch engages, the idle speed is increased to prevent the engine from bogging down or stalling.

My 2.7L 99 prerunner does this lurch. Pretty sure my 3.4L 98 4runner does it also. Both are automatics.
