Visited my dealer and had the inventory manager check... The dealer told me that there is 1 truck in my configuration in GST showing up for my dealer... with no build date or temp VIN.. this just means Toyota / GST accepted the order, but not on schedule for a build yet correct?

I'm a bit doubtful because of the way the dealer said things. He said "there's one in your configuration in the whole GST region", and when I pressed on him, then he said "that's yours"... I'm hoping he did actually see in the system that one was in fact allocated for my dealer...fingers crossed..

Got a call from local dealer last night pushing the date of delivery back again. This time to the end of the month.
Initial VIN they gave me was 3TMCZ5AN0GM022404
Last night it was changed to GM024087
    Something is not right!

Just Placed an order on a ORDCSB 4x4 with JLB yesterday. Next logical thing was to join TW.

Dealer told me it will be around 6-8 weeks till I get the truck!

Did u order a special build for your truck? 3 months before it is actually built seems a little long. 15-16 weeks for delivery, f*ck that. I would have walked out. Unfortunately I have 0 patients. I'm the kind of guy that paints something before the glue is dried lol. I know the truck has a temp VIN before the build and another after. Idk how much it changes after the build. If u are getting a different Vin before the build, sounds like something is fudged.

Those are not Temp VINS, which would suggest they are just waiting for your vehicle to show up in the correct configuration, rather than attempt to change an allocation order to fit your request.

Basically the first one ended up not being what you wanted (or they pulled something even shadier and traded it/sold it to make a better deal, but that is speculation) and they have happened to find one that has been built like you wanted and so they are waiting for that one to arrive. Sucks, not a good way for the dealer to do business.

Not a special build at all. Just a double cab sport 4x4 in silver.
Turns out my original VIN is in fact arriving this friday but the sleezeball dealership was going to deliver it to another buyer and make me wait another couple of weeks.
Better be a damn good truck because the service is terrible.
I'll be writing Toyota Motor Sales a note.

Well this is the worst, my interior LED bulbs showed up yesterday, and my customcargrills.com mesh grill and FJ Cruiser style badge came today... and I think my taco is getting built on the 24th :(

Why is it that Toyota themselves say ~40% of Tacomas they sell are TRDs (Sport & OR), yet you see pretty much no ORs that are not pre-sold in the inventories and you see so many SRs and SR5s sitting in inventories?

My dealer fluctuates between 15~22 Tacomas for the past 2 months in their inventory, and 75% of them are SRs and SR5s just sitting there. There are maybe 1 or 2 limited, 1 or 2 sport or 1 or 2 ORs at different times.. Other dealers in my area are the same...

Supply and demand. They're keeping low inventory on the models That people want so the price stays up. And if they sell a lot of TRDs doesn't it make since that those are the ones in order?

Even the SR's and SR5's are flying off the floors here, more so if they're 4 wheel. Nothing stays longer than a few days. If it's a 4 door TRD it's almost guaranteed to be a customer build, especially a MT.

You didn't get my point... It is TOYOTA THEMSELVES that said 40% of Tacomas they sell are TRDs based on their past experience and market research.. meaning the rest 60% are comprised of SR5s, SRs, Limited. Assuming there are more SR5s and SRs sold than Limited, I'll assume ~40% of Tacomas are SR5 and SRs and ~20% are limited. This is based on Toyota and what they see based on their market research and experience, etc.

If their intention is to keep the price up on TRDs, why am I getting 2k off MSRP? why are most people getting discounts? why do some even get one at invoice or below? It's not like dealers are marking up the TRDs. This clearly isn't Toyota / dealers controlling supply vs demand.. this is clearly a case of significant production issue. I'll bet you Toyota or the dealers would make more money overall by selling many many more at a bit of a discount than a few fewer at a MSRP or a markup... Tacoma is a volume product. Period. This ain't a limited production vehicle where to make the most money, they must sell each at the highest price possible.

So they should be making 40% TRDs 40% SR/SR5s etc. It's not like whoever wants a TRDs are walking off the lot right away, they are having to wait months. If Toyota is in fact producing 40% of Tacomas as TRDs, why do the 40% of the Tacoma buyers that prefer TRDs having to wait months, when there are SRs and SR5s sitting in dealer lots?

And I've seen plenty of people ordering SR5s and SRs, too. But yet still there are SRs and SR5s sitting in the lots... Yeah it may look like there are alot of TRD buyers in the forums, but that's more likely because TRD buyers are more enthusiastic about their trucks and post more on forums. I don't think looking at how many pics of TRDs are posted on the forums is the best way to measure that majority of buyers are TRD buyers ;)

Pic of my Taco order, side of accessories I may or may not use lol...as I am definitely in the waiting game with a 4/5 build date.

Maybe because the 40% who are willing to spend over $30k on a Toyota truck are content to wait for the options they want? It's a Goldilocks business model. You go drive an SR5 and then a Limited and then order a TRD that is juuuuust right.

A lot, not all, of those deep discount 3rd gen scenarios I have seen involve a high value trade in. It always makes me skeptical of the actual discount since the dealer can make back a lot of that money on selling the trade in. Need to compare non trade in offers and factor in dealer fees for a true comparison which nobody seems to do.

$3000 off MSRP w/ Trade in and $1000 dealer fee

    Vs.

500 off MSRP, no trade in and $80 dealer fee

Is hard to compare without real valuation on the trade in vehicle.

Nice. Just got confirmation today that the Quicksand ORDC I ordered 2 weeks ago has a build date of April 21. Delivery sometime in early May.

Okay. So I may not understand what you're trying to argue. Is it the 40% TRD they're claiming? In any case, there is definitely a production issue. Esp. With the 4x4s. My dealer said they've been extremely slow and allocating 4 x 4's especially to the Southern California region. Supposedly they are supposed to increase production of those trucks this quarter or next quarter.
