I went talked to my dealer 2 weeks ago, complaining no progress (no VIN, no build date) after 2.5 months of waiting, and they said if I changed color preference, they have an allocation coming in that they believe will be delivered in 1-2 weeks. So I asked what the VIN or build date was, and they didn't see that info, just that according the that allocation's status in their system, the next step is it being built "soon".

Anyone have a guess at why a dealer would say so confidently they see a truck coming into them in 1-2 weeks, but there's no VIN num (not even a temp VIN) or delivery date (or even a build date) that the sales guy sees in their system?

I think I need to call BS on them soon...

    I'm in Texas

And yeah, I plan on going in to speak with them next week when I'm back in town. I've been talking with other dealerships, but bottom line I will buy the truck from whomever has it available first (at the price I want, of course)

Wow reading a lot of issues on this thread makes me nervous! I have a very specific list of options, so the dealer better not fudge that up. They specifically told me that the smaller options are super easy to add/remove while the truck is still at the factory in a certain stage of build. I wanted a quicksand TRD off road 6 spd, put the order in two weeks ago. Got a call today that the order was filled but it's black (my second choice). No word on the options on it but they assured me those would be added exactly as I wanted. I'm gonna take the black one, as waiting for my exact vehicle might never even happen from reading some other guy's posts. The Taco's are in high demand!

I wonder how many people in this thread are actually "ordering" trucks that are then custom built? It seems like a lot of people are getting in 4-6 weeks and I'd suspect that although they may've "ordered" it, it wasn't actually custom built. It seems like maybe the dealer was just able to find one or change the specifications/features on a truck that was already in the queue to be built. But I guess I have no idea... I put in an order and was told 2.5 - 4 months. The owner of the dealership is also a family friend and he said he requested that the order be given priority. Anyway, I "ordered" almost 4 weeks ago and still haven't been given any kind of VIN/build date/ETA/etc. despite inquiring with the dealer.

Can anyone who is receiving their truck in <6 weeks confirm that the truck was actually custom-built to your specifications? Or was the dealer able to just find you something that met your specs?

It's kind of a double-edged sword knowing the dealer. I know he's not going to drop the ball, but I feel bad bugging him about updates. Although after a month, it'd be nice to know if the order was even accepted by Toyota or some kind of glimmer of hope!!

I ordered my truck, but it was not a custom build. It was allocated to another dealer.

When I first ordered, my dealer gave me a sample vin, it was a real truck, but to my spec. It also said reserved, and they told me that meant it was unlikely I would get that particular one. They were right.

two weeks later they were updated by toyota with a build date of April 21. This was in early March. Putting my delivery, just like they had said, between 8 and 10 weeks.

Last week they updated me with news that it would be built April 18. Today they told me it was in transit.

Rick Collins Toyota has been nothing but good through this whole thing. Even matching prices on wheels and other aftermarket stuff.

Glad others aren't having the same issue. Anyone else having trouble getting a trd sport w/ tech pkg? Just trying to see if anyone else is being told what I am. Thanks.

Mine was built last week 4/13 and is set to be delivered 4/29-5/1. TRD sport dclb with tech and jbl. I've been waiting since early March. 6-8 weeks seems to be about right.

My truck didn't originally come with the tech package. It was just the TRD sport dclb 4x4. The dealer had this truck in allocation so they were able to add this to the order before the truck was built.

From what I understand is no one is getting a "custom built" truck. The dealer requests an allocation from the factory for a truck with your specs. Then the factory tells the dealer what is being produced and if it happens to match what you want you get lucky. But ultimately you get what the factory makes.

I ordered my truck and my allocation got accepted but found out a week after it got accepted that it will have added options I did not request. My dealer told me I could try for another allocation but I decided against it. Tired of waiting!

There are a few people on here that work for Toyota that can run the vin to check the status of your truck. I have not been that lucky yet though to get an update other than the updates I get from my salesperson.

Yeah, I won't consider my truck "custom built". I simply could not find the truck I wanted in a manual in this area. So I ordered it.

    ok, so first post...

Found an allocation for a TRD off-road 6 speed at a dealer in early march after looking around for about four weeks. I was printed off a customer information sheet that showed black interior and no tonneau cover and put a deposit down. I was also given an OTD price.

Driving by dealership today (I have been trying not to bother them too much since my delivery date wasn't scheduled until next friday) I see a TRD off road in the color I ordered sitting off in a corner. I pull in and check it out and see that it has additional items (aftermarket tonneau cover, orange interior, aftermarket led bed lights) that didn't match my customer information sheet, so I was convinced it couldn't be mine.

Then I see my last name on the front off the vehicle under a Pre-Sold sticker.

So my question is this; how would aftermarket add-ons be applied by the dealer before it was even delivered? I even verified that those parts are aftermarket (pretty obvious). Not so worried about the orange interior, it wouldn't have been my first choice but it looks pretty good in combo with MGM. I really don't want a crappy aftermarket tonneau cover (and it is pretty crappy) and some hack-job bed light wiring. I had planned on buying my own tonneau cover and had done a lot of research too.

I am pretty irritated with the dealership, but hope I can get this resolved.

I feel your pain, but the dealership's attitude will be "If you don't want it, we'll just sell it to the next person"

Seems a lot of people are getting just that... exactly what they want (minus some people getting bullshit extra add-ons). Maybe it's not "custom built" but it's a "truck built to your specifications".
I just got my build date of mid-May. Should be able to pick er up by end of May. This is for an order placed the last week of March. So if all goes well it'll be almost exactly 2 months from order placed to pickup.

I ordered a DCLB TRD OR Super White for my son in January and it is scheduled to arrive in 2 weeks. My son has no need for it now because his boss just bought him a new truck.

Today I spoke with the owner of the dealership where the Tacoma was ordered and he said he would hold the truck for me in case I wanted it or I could give the truck allocation to a friend. I have enough vehicles and my friends already have trucks. So, if you are looking for this model and a serious buyer I will pass along the dealership owners name and cell number to you and he will hold the truck for you. The price will be up determined by you and the dealership owner. I have purchased a few vehicles from the owner and he is very cool guy, a fellow off-roader and down to earth individual.

Truck was ordered with all options except for: JBL-Moonroof-bed cover-heated seats. Truck was ordered in January and is scheduled for delivery in two weeks at dealer.

So here's an opportunity to get a Tacoma TRD DCLB in Super White without a long wait and probably at a very fair price.

PM for contact information, I hope it helps someone frustrated with the long waits for the 2016's!
