When do we get our real VIN #'s? I assume when the truck arrives at the dealership?

so that VIN number is a real number that I was given its not a "placeholder" VIN or fake VIN number? Cuz I am slated to pickup my truck by Halloween.

It's a real vin number. Once the car is slated to be built, it's assigned accordingly for DMV purposes and such.

Thanks for clarifying. When I was in sales and people special ordered cars the VIN wouldn't populate until it had a build date. At least for VWs

a valid vin contain numbers in the last 6 positions of the VIN. if an alpha character exist in the last 6 positions, its a placeholder VIN sequence number. an actual VIN will not be assigned until the vehicle is actually produced.

kinda hard to have a VIN on a vehicle that doesn't exist.

Good to know then I have a real VIN and my vehicle is exactly on par with what the dealership has been communicating with me. Thanks for the lesson on VIN's.

Well the vehicle has to have a vin to populate exactly what that vehicle will have installed in the build process. Therefore it has a real vin prior to being built.

yep keep thinking that, until you have an actual date in the production date line, you will have a temp VIN. the VIN displayed when it only shows a estimate production date will be a placeholder VIN with an alpha character in the last 6 positions.

otherwise post a pic of your status or print out with a VIN.

I am just speaking of my experience in the auto industry for Nissan, and the build process specifically. I don't have any info for Toyota and I need to know what to ask from my dealer as I have one on order.

for Toyota, they put a placeholder VIN when they have a estimated production date. when a vehicle has been produced, it gets a valid VIN.

examples : temp VIN and actual VIN.

1st pic show a temp VIN with a "B" in the 14th position. the number before the alpha shows the projected week of build.

2nd pic shows an actual VIN since it has an actual production date. also you can see the temp s/n isn't even close to the actual VIN.

also to add, the VIN up to position 11 is valid since it that is already a know since the plant and stats are based on what is being made, just the sequence number is never know until its actually built.
