    Hey folks,

I am looking at some used 1st gen tacomas and was wondering what level of rust should I just "walk away" at. Its hard for me to judge since I am not experienced. Pictures are my friend. :D

any frame rust/rot, walk away. buy an 01-04 if you can afford it. less of an issues.

if your buying older, and there's some body rust, thats ok, as long as you fix it right away.

meaning grind away ALL of the rust, then fill with bondo if needed, then primer paint and clearcoat.

    good luck on your purchase

    stock, for now
surface rust is acceptable, just make sure the seller didnt paint over any problems. Also, if you do purchase one with frame rust, make sure to sand/scrape it all off, and then get the truck undercoated.

95.5 - 00 tacomas are being bought back for frame rust.
01-04 Tacomas are getting frame replacements (if warranted)

Both era's are getting 15 year warranty for frame rust.

is it logical to undercoat the frame after you "think" you have gotten off all the rust. I only say that because, what if you "trap" something in.

If you really want a first gen, I would suggest looking for one in the south or out west. That is where the good ones are.

Well then if that is the case, I will probably just ride my car till it dies(97 sunfire), then buy new. I'm not willing to go all the way out west and/or south for a tacoma.

The tacoma I was looking at is a 98 that I could haggle him down to around 3900-4100 most likely.

    Eh, I'm perplexed.

Toyota buys the trucks back at 150% of Kelly Blue Book. You could easily make your money back (and then some) even if the frame is bad.

What if I go to get it inspected and they take it away from me?

(as in, i don't own the truck yet)

I've heard some of those horror stories.

It would be bought back from the titled owner. Don't take it in unless you own it.

Are you planning on financing or purchasing up front?

The place to look for the frame rot is on the insides of the frame rails from spring perch to spring perch (leafs). Toyota will take a hammer and hit the frame (all over). If the hammer succeeds in penetrating the frame it is a failure. If the frame has been patched, it is an automatic failure. If it passes, you will be given a 15 yr warranty on the frame and have it inspected annually. I don't think they are coating the first gen's but I could be wrong.

If the frame fails, (depending on the dealership) you will be given a rental. You will have to surrender the truck at which Toyota will get back to you in a week or say with an offer for the truck (150% KBB in excellent condition).

Keep in mind I have seen were some people were told they have to wait 6 months after they purchased it to be bought back and I have seen were some people had it bought back only after a month of ownership. It seems to be a crap shoot.
