Even with flat ground, RPM's that low in a 4cyl will be miserable/impossible. Toyota won't release a manual with that kind of a ratio even in part because people want to be able to put it in the highest gear and leave it there for all intents and purposes on the highway (obviously excluding passes and traffic). Also, there are plenty of areas where the speed limits don't exceed 60 to 65, let alone city driving, which would make the truck a 5 speed again with a completely useless 6th gear.

I will say that the times I've forgotten to downshift on the highway for whatever reason and was in 6th at ~1500RPM's my truck was very very unhappy and had absolutely zero power on top of it. I spin 2750-2800RPM's at 75mph in my 2006 6MT 4.0 V6, but for fuel economy purposes I normally drive at 70mph @ 2500RPM's on the nose.

We talked about that document on Nov 2nd in the other thread.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/posts/16385728/

Basically, that is the same error prone document they released in October. It also shows on one page that the tow package is still optional on all models and it also states it is standard for all V6 models on a different page. Someone combined the 2017 and 2018 docs and did not proofread before releasing.

Agreed, were not talking about a V8 here. Lugging the engine on the highway gives you even worse mpg.
I just can't believe Toyota would design a new 6spd for the 4banger. There's no good reason to do it. The 5spd is more than adequate and absolutely issue free and they already overhauled it from the gen 2 version

Something just dawned on me. The 2.7/5MT has 3.90 rear gears. With the 4:30s it would probably be real nice with the 6 speed.

Sorry but pretty sure this is completely wrong.
The 3rd gen 2.7 has 4.30 axle ratios no matter what

Nope. The 2.7 5MT definitely has 3:90s. The auto has 4:30s. A google search will pull up Toyotas PDF specs which are the same as the OP posted. Also I checked my door tag which deciphers to 3.90

when do you think one will be able to build a 2018 on toyota.com?

seems silly to leave the 2017 builds up but maybe they still have a ton to sell?

Really?? My bad then but that's way undergeared especially for a 4x4... and weird as fuck because even the gen 2 2.7 trucks have 4.10 (4x4, 2x4, auto & manual).
Additionally the v6 has 3.9 if automatic and 4.3 if manual so the exact other way around. Weird

No problem. I think this came about with the new rear 8.75" ring gear (howling rear) they introduced as all the MT trucks have them. I think the 4:30s with the 6 speed would be nice.

Anyone else notice that there is no gear ratio for 6th on the spec sheet for the 4 cyl.? Not producing the 4 cyl manual trans would be a sin.

Everything I've read besides this thread indicates that Toyota are sinners then. I bought my 2017 SR 4cyl 5speed MT because I heard from multiple sources that it wasn't going to be produced anymore. Anything on the higher trims gets the V-6 anyway, and a 6-speed manual. My dealer was happy to quote me on one of those trucks...at $9000 more than I paid for mine.

I believe 5 speed is being replaced globally. I saw that only the base 4x2 Hilux still has a 5 speed, the 4x4 and Hi-Rider (which is a 4x2 with a 4wd ride height like our Prerunner) both get 6 speed sticks now standard.

I think since Toyota doesn't really produce truly base model 4x2 Tacoma anymore that they are only dropping the 5 speed from the 2.7L configuration and selling it with a 6 speed.

A 4cyl with the 6th Gear ratio of 0.71, a rear diff ratio of 3.90 and 30.5 in. Diameter tires has an engine speed of 1980rpm@65mph

With a 4.30 rear diff ratio you are looking at 2190rpm@65mph in 6th gear.

    Roger that,

Stock 30.5 inch tires and 3.90 rear is 3437rpm@80mph

    4.30 rear end is 3790rpm@80mph

Ok cool thanks. I keep it around 3k, and often find myself getting on it a little to pass, end up at 80 and the rpms are still in the comfort zone.
