Thermostat replacement question

Excellent findings there! Few months back i went rouds with a member on here and he swore uo and down that me the fsm and a few other forum members were full of shit and there was no way the thermostat positioning would result in a temperature difference. Well once again its been tested and confirmed! Good work my man!

Can you see the thermostat easily or do you have to pull the plastic timing cover off? Where is it located. Can anyone post a visual?

 

Its off the bottom radiator hose..at the engine of course.

 

Yeah just follow the lower hose until it connects to the thermostat housing. You don't have to remove any covers or anything to get at it.

 

OK. Stupid question. Do you drain the coolant out of the bottom of the rad or from someplace else prior to swapping out the t-stat?
I'm assuming some type of a hose connected to the drain into a clean jug or something to hold the coolant?

 

There’s a drain valve at the bottom corner of the radiator.. Just drain enough into a clean bucket to get the fluid level below the thermostat. Then you can remove the housing and swap out the thermostat. Jiggle valve goes down.

 

Approx how much do you think I should have to drain. The level of the coolant in the recovery tank at "full" seems to be at or near the same level of the t-stat. Maybe a cup or two (soda can worth)?

 

Oh yeah. Do I need to worry about any oil leaking out of the oil lines going to the oil filter if I remove those for easier access?

 

The recovery/expansion tank won’t show any fluid drop while draining. Drain about a half gallon maybe a full gallon. It’s really a guess. It’s easy to fill the radiator back up so just drain a good amount.

You won’t need to remove anything to do the thermostat. You just have a hard time seeing the bottom fastener. It’s easy with feel and an extension on a ratchet.

I always go OEM. Unless it's really expensive. Thermostats are cheap. You'll likely be fine with any decent thermostat. Just remember, jiggle valve at 6 o' clock.

Dave, I just saw that you are in an 06 Tacoma? This is the first gen Taco forum up to 2004. Your location will be different obviously, so I'm not familiar with access or where the thermostat is. But the principles are still the same though. Run over to the 2nd gen forum and be sure you compare notes with someone there. Especially with the position of the jiggle valve. (I think it's still 6 o'clock but double check.)

Well I "gotterdun".
Only removed one oil line and one bracket for more clearance back there. And the jiggle valve is pointing down. Temp gauge only goes about half way up.

Now that I replaced the thermostat, will the yellow engine light turn itself off or do I need to get it hooked to an OBDII scanner to get it turned off?

 

That depends on what set off the code. You can pull the negative terminal to reset the code, or after a few thermal cycles of the engine, if there isn't anything wrong, it will go out. Probably the quickest and easiest is to pull the battery cable.
