Not sure about OP's state but I think since there was an officer present, the OP could have legally been able to say he wants it done either by them or that he would like a citizen's arrest to be affected. I'm not suggesting OP should have physically held him at all, to be clear.

This is why he and his family need to be held accountable to the full extent of the law. Do you really want to be the guy who reads the next headline about this punk or one of his buddies killing someone else in Nepoville Abovethelawburg and curse yourself for not having done the right things and now someone else's family is dead?

A few years back a drunk kid slid through the corner and ended up in my fence next to the driveway.
He reeked like booze, the two cops who showed up just shrugged

That’s not how that works. If the police are there the police decide who gets arrested. A citizen’s arrest in most states is simply the detention and presentation to judge/clerk/officer of the person and their alleged crime.

I did stupid stuff for sure, OFF ROAD where the only thing I messed up were my teeth or the vehicle I was driving. Wasting multiple vehicles, drinking and driving, reckless driving, not so much. Sure I got a few speeding tickets but those weren't for some ridiculously excessive speeds.

And texting while driving when an unskilled teen driver, I'd be far harder on those drivers then they are now, first offense would be 6 months of loss of your DL, they are the new drunk drivers IMHO.

Perhaps on the talking with a lawyer first
But if you want to put the police on blast for letting someone off they shouldn't have, bad PR is how you do that and get results
My issue re:social media is not the kid, it is the police not doing their job and letting this slide because some are more equal than others

    The parents are to blame
If I got a ticket as a minor, my parents would have taken my car and no longer paid my insurance and I would have been SOL
Did I do dumb shit? 100% because that is what teenagers do - but I did less dumb shit b/c my parents made very sure that I knew, poor decisions lead to sometimes brutal consequences. And they were not going to bail me out of shit. In fact, I had to bail myself outta jail at 18.
Keep sparing your kid the consequences, sooner or later it will catch up - -

It's one of those deal with it now or suffer the consequences later. It might be a stretch, but how many times does the lack of accountability, or a long pattern of zero accountability lead to a mental health crisis and ultimately end in the death of that individual by law enforcement?

    Too many

But I will add, I don't blame law enforcement in those cases - LE job is not a mental health professional, period; it is irrational to toss that responsibility on them along with every other bit of their job. If it gets to that point, the individual's families already failed the person in question - so claiming the police shot my mentally ill deranged adult "baby' is absurd.

I have had family in that situation, we tried to help, we punished [like a dozen times] - in the end it wasn't till he did 2 years in prison that he decided to comply with his meds. Had to cops shot him in the event that led to his incarceration, I wouldn't have blamed them one bit. He was dangerous off his meds. Unfortunately it took prison to make him comply - or more the threat of going back to prison..

People need to learn to take responsibility and stop pawning it off on others or blaming "circumstances"

No I don't blame LE in those situations, because there's usually a history where LE gets the person some help albeit short term and days latter they are back dealing with the same individual who happens to be more violent and sometimes armed.

The new gen tacoma doesnt have leaf spring, theyre coil springs unless youre looking at the bottom of the barrel SR model...

If you weren't looking at the sr model, what youre seeing is just a trailing arm, youre referring to is as a leaf spring...
my understanding the SR has leafs,
everything else has coil springs in the rear.

Dont think you will be saving much by opting for an sr vs an sr5.
    Sr also has less power.

SR auto transmission has 50 fewer HP, but the manual transmission version of the SR (if indeed it was an SR) OP test drove is only down by 8 HP.

    I did say less power
    The toyota line is complicated....
I dont know all the ins / outs...
Im assuming all the SR's have leafs only & cant get them with coils..

all the models have the same power with the turbo 4, the manual transmission has a de-tuned engine because (according to toyota) the existing 6 speed couldn't handle all the torque, so it's only a few ft lbs different.

SR has leafs yes. I was looking at that because I don't need all the extras and I can always add coils down the road.

you can't get the SR5 with the 6 speed. to get that, you have to jump from the SR to the TRD Sport or TRD Offroad.

Got it, Well they also do make SR5's that are also stripped-out & no bells & whistles, & extras.....
I think ide rather have the coil spring config like all the other models from the get go personally, but thats me...

Saw this post but havent read through it:

Ok, but this is all just rank speculation. Nobody on this thread, including OP, has any idea of the consequences this kid is facing with his parents, no way to know. Just a bizarre desire to join some message board lynch mob eager to indict based on extremely limited information given by OP who has even told us that his access to information is limited.

I mean in 2 breaths you told us how parent imposed consequences kept your poor decision making mitigated, then that you had bail yourself out of jail at age 18…so one would think that you should understand that even with what you believe to be adequate parenting, kids still screw up.

I'm very technical, used to work on Subarus and race them.

I anticipate that people will be able to easily use digital tuners to up the performance. the only difference between the SR and SR5 engine wise is they didn't include the oil cooler, but that's an add-on option you can get from the dealer (and really only necessary for towing). the rest is just extra stuff like wheels (you can get dealer options here too).

the frame and body are identical and you could swap in arms and springs for far less than the cost of the SR5 complete package of extra junk that not everyone needs (like the bigger infotainment screen and detachable speaker that come in the other trims, totally unnecessary). just my opinion though: the gen 4 2025 SR base model with a couple of tweaks (double cab, alloy wheels, the extra safety tech, etc) is leaps and bounds beyond my kitted-out Canadian market gen 2 2007 TRD "Commercial" Tacoma. you can mount huge wheels and tires without even needing a lift, for example. just a far superior design. they even fixed the horrible seating position for tall guys like me.

kids make shit choices, bailing them out teaches them nothing
i learned my lesson and drained my bank account all in one day
kids today seem to not understand consequences, most parents are too busy being 'friends' with their kids vs parenting

we at least know the kid got a pass on a potential DUI charge
i might have let the kid leave the scene, just so he would catch another charge

    but ok, whatever you say
a lot of what goes on here is rank speculation, it's called the internet - welcome to the party!
