I cringe hard when I see people spending double digit thousands on mods just to visit national parks or malls.

Alaska is literally only state so rural and far from urgent help that is justified for someone to spent thousands on overlanding gear.

You should try spending less time cringing at other people enjoying their lives and their ways to get outdoors, and spend more time getting outdoors yourself. Bonus being that you won't have time to be bothered by all these people making you cringe.

I am, that's where I see those people with their modified trucks. Same place as they visit, its just I only have tire upgrades on my SR5.

Satellite phone has nothing to do with the truck, people have those all over the world. You can be driving Prius and have that and emergency kit.

No it must be the one with flashy looks, so people can brag about overlanding in malls and backyards with their $$ $$$ modified trucks.

The type that doesn’t ring when your boss or :angrygirl::ballchain:calls?

I did update to a iPhone 13 so I can use the Satellite feature for letting my wife know my location for emergencies when I’m off grid, Other than that, I wouldn’t think of needing to use Starlink or something like that as I don’t work online.

Op: As for “overlanding” in the continental US, We really can’t legally do it because we have to stay on trails and roads here and can’t cut cross country like they do in Australia (The real meaning of the term). So I would think the right term here is just Off-Roading and remote camping. But I don’t see anything wrong with me keeping a roof top tent on my truck or having extra camping gear in it as we go off most weekends for camping in the desert and that stuff is too heavy to take out every week. Besides, I’m retired so really don’t have to worry about how all that gear will impact a daily driver.

I do have to say that I wouldn’t keep plastic traction boards or those Tupperware fuel cans bolted on the outside of the truck full-time like some do, all that stuff is sun sensitive and will become brittle by the time someone actually uses them.

What kind of overlanding mods do you mean?

I’ll chuckle if i see someone with two spare tires as if they’re in the australian outback.

Ok, I admit I didn’t need the traction boards, solar shower, Jerry cans of gas, trash bag and extra spare IN Yellowstone.

But I sure needed/used them while dispersed camping on the way to and back from Yellowstone.

And lo and behold, that trip, while amazing was just training for trips up the James Bay road to the upper parts of Hudson Bay and up the ALCAN and on to Prudhoe bay.

The horror, after a week on the road I spent the night at 10 Sleep Brewery’s campground…..

I wouldn’t do it full-time, but I do carry a second spare when we go rock-hounding. Some of the mine roads and trash around them shreds tires. Most of the time just a plug kit and compressor are sufficient though, and you don’t even have to jack it or take the tires off the truck to fix them either.

Starlink / Sat phone is essential for most overland equipped vehicles - especially when being far remote.

(e.g. parking far away -like even 200' away from the mall entrance due to holiday crowds.)

    Anything could happen out there.

I have an older coworker with a new Jeep gladiator that has a fancy bed rack with things like propane and traction boards fitted to it. All I know is he loves going to Baja Mexico, but I have no idea if he actually uses everything he's equipped it with. This is a guy who doesn't know how to DIY anything and would rather pay someone else to do everything, but that said it could be his one true hobby. I can say I've never seen it with a spec of dirt on it though lol
