the 2016 does not have the grab handle like my 2008 had on the drivers side front window pillar post, i do miss that, always used that to pull myself into the truck.
the storage compartment on the drivers door is much smaller, in my 2008 i kept a 10" bayonet
in there. in fact i left it in there when i traded it in, duh!!
the truck is higher off the ground, can't get to the center of the front windshield when washing it.
the first issue i miss the most the others no big deal.

Its as if they want you to pull yourself in with the steering wheel which is a bad idea.

Has anyone installed the driver side grab handle on a 16 ? It was/is possible on the new Tundra's that eliminated the same thing starting with the 14 models ... there is a thread on how to do it on Tundra Talk, so should be able to install on Taco.

Were Tundra guys using Seqouia parts? If so, probably not going to work in the case of the Tacoma. I would say go look for a 4Runner part to substitute, but 5th gen 4Runners, at least last time I sat in one, have a different windshield profile than the Tacoma nowadays.

I could be wrong. But really Toyota has been dividing similarities between Tacoma and 4Runner more and more as the generations go on.

Maybe another Toyota suv or Lexus model that may have similarities. idk

Can it be done safely with the air-bag now in place there?

The passenger side had an airbag there as well with the grab handle.

If it was a penny pinch move, why would they remove the driver's side and leave the passenger side? Seems to make more sense to eliminate the passenger one first. This is why I think there may be a different reason.

    * see above links

.. boils down to cost-cutting. (not just handle either)

    The better coast

Most likely because there is a greater chance of there being a driver in the truck and not a passenger. W/o the handle it's one less thing that could hit the driver on deployment.

Or (pulling this out of my ass) that the side curtain wraps up a little bit higher on the driver side and the handle wouldn't fit

Unless I missed something (I didn't read all 11 pages of the first thread linked), it doesn't say why they would choose driver's side rather than passenger side if it was to save money. Can you enlighten us?

I'm going to be the odd man out but I have NEVER ever used a grab handle to get in my Taco's or my Jeep (rest it's soul)... unless it's lifted do we really need it? I mean I'm 5 damn 9...not winning any height awards and it's never been an issue. Open door, get in... no steering wheel or grab bar. Could just be me I suppose...

I have a disability so it's hard for me to get in the truck (legs don't work well). I have to have the grab handle. I guess I am going to have to keep my 2010...

When I went to visit my parents a few weeks ago, everyone wanted to drive the new truck. When I climbed into the passenger seat I noticed that with the handle I didn't have to make any special effort not to hit my head on the door sill. The handle helps a lot. My step-dad then proceeded to stall it in the driveway and bitch about the "overly sensitive clutch" on a vehicle with under a thousand miles :p Mom was still laughing when we got back from the dump.

My mother, being who she is, then wanted to "take it around the block". Again I noticed how much easier it was to get into the passenger seat with the handle. Then she tried to rip the tranny off it's damned mounts by (what felt like) sidestepping the clutch at full throttle. I cringed. I cringe just thinking about it. The tires didn't bark or anything, but my soul did.

She spent the rest of the weekend lording it over us that she didn't stall it on the first try, while we both did.

tl;dr: Getting into the passenger seat is a LOT easier with the grab-handle. I really wish I had one on the driver's side.
