Off road or out at night on forestry roads, you can see distance while spotting bambi and her mom lurking in the ditches.

Ya I guess I could see the use of having hi-beams and fog lights (or other additional lights) off-road, but I rarely drive off-road at night because all the locations in my state close at sunset and I've never noticed that the fog lights make any difference at all anyway. Maybe next time I'm in a night time off-road situation, I'll turn on the fog lights and report back my findings.

The windows should roll up when you go to high beams, and vice vs. and if you have your lights set to fogs on w/ high the truck will pull to the left, I wouldnt fuck with that hack.
Judging by the picture, your truck is crooked, you can tell by the lines of the parking space. If it was aligned, you would be pulled in parallel to the white lines and not skewed. :notsure:

OP, how did you discover that the fogs turn off when the hi-beams are turned on? Did you notice this while driving or when admiring your truck from the outside? :)

I work in the bush, often traveling at night.

I drove two highway mountain passes one night in rolling fog and snow conditions switching between high beams with aux high beams and low with fogs as conditions changed at every corner. With my lights, it was like driving at twighlight.

I've been in plenty of snow storms out in the country where I grew up and never noticed that fog lights helped. I've seen thick fog much less frequently and never to the point where I thought I needed to slow to under 10mph or so where I think fog lights might be useful. In my experience, at speeds of 10+ mph you are looking way out in front of the area where the fogs are lighting stuff up.

Driving from Toronto to Florida I hit fog in the mountains in West Virginia before that probably seen fog 20 years ago or so so really the point is they're not fog lights just extra lights that I can turn on and illuminate as much as possible in front of me...off roads of course

In high school I had a rust bucket Datsun pickup with backup lights that gave me no confidence backing up in the "bush" at night. I had a spare headlight from a different truck in the garage, so I duck taped it to the roof pointing backwards and ran some wires to it controlled by a switch. It worked like a charm. Best backup lighting I ever had.

One night I was driving through town when I saw cherries behind me. The local police officer (who happened to be in my father's high school class) asked, what the f**k is that?! (pointing to my roof) Huh? Oh, sorry! That's my backup light. I forgot to turn it off. He let me go free with a warning and a laugh.

I removed the light the next day.

It defeats the purpose, because your increase in visibility is being minimalized/cancelled out. I'm talking about the factual science behind how your eyes actually work, not the "turned night into day" perception.

High beams are intended to illuminate the road, at a far distance in front of you. Fog lamps illuminate the immediate foreground in front of the vehicle. By illuminating the immediate foreground, your pupils react to that light and constrict, effectively reducing your ability to see distance. Anything lit-up by that immediate foreground light is also already too close for you to properly react to, when travelling at any appreciable speed. You want your headlamps to be able to let you see things well enough away to be able to react to them.

Fog lamps intended purpose is to help you navigate better in foul weather, when you're travelling at reduced speeds.

Per federal vehicle regulations/law, it is illegal to run your high beams and fog lamps on at the same time. Granted that's for the US, I don't know about the lighting laws up there in Tacoville, Canuckistan.

Just to add more confusion to your clarity; driving lamps are not the same as fog lamps, and it's got less to do with the color of the light being produced than you'd think. It has to do with how the light is being projected. Driving lamps are like your headlamps, they throw the light well down the road. Likewise, it's not legal to run auxiliary driving lamps with low beams on - they're supposed to be tied into your high beam circuit. So, fog lamps + low beams, and driving lamps + high beams.

If your intention is to light up the whole trail while off road at night, when you're at crawling speeds and nobody's coming at you? Have at it. Follow the tutorial on here for the fog anytime mod and have fun. You were asking how/why, I'm just trying to help answer those questions.

I've been toying with the idea of adding a second brake pedal, the right pedal operates the right side and left the left side. That way I can drive my truck with my feet and dont need a steering wheel. Like a skid steer. Alignment issue solved.

In heavy thick snow, yellow fogs work pretty well vs white low beams.
