I should mention I'm about 6'2" as size with a car seat keeps coming up.

I need a truck as i intend to haul dog with kid when we go to the cabin or camping. Also I plan on getting a canopy for camping but it mostly won't be used due to my dirtbiking habit (addiction/problem). The wife currently has a four door golf but that doesn't work well for hauling stuff to the cabin or camping. Otherwise it would be nice to keep the 1st gen longer.

Go for the truck. I took the family(wife, two toddlers, and a 100 lb dog) camping a few weekends ago and couldn't be happier with the truck.

What about a Subaru wagon, the outback with a car carrier can haul some stuff, not as much as the truck, but better than the vw

It's not actually a bed tent. The tent is just set up perfectly behind the truck so it looks like it is. I have to look twice at the picture every time. Its actually just a big 8-person tent.

Haha dang that's crazy, looks just like a bed tent lol. I want an RTT before we go to Moab in May but I just bought sliders and still have to buy my lift kit, front and rear off road bumpers, and larger tires so I don't think I'll be able to swing an RTT by then

Yes i have 3 todler seats in the bsck.
I get 19.5 mpg in town just over 21 on the highway at 70 mph
21 gal tank. Boug a 400 mile range.
I like the entune. Ive got the tech pkg
Ive isned all 3 gens. The 3ed is the easiest to park.
I do all my maintenance as well. Gen 2 was simple. I cant see the 3rd gen being any different. Other thsn the oil filter. Lol we were spoiled with the top mount filter.

All in all the 3rd gen is a space ship. Im happy.

2 boosters and a forward facing seat in the back of mine. The issue with the center position is that it is not latch equipped, but the outside seats are. Rear facing is annoying in most vehicles, but you adjust. Just bought a week ago so first fill up was 20.8. Entune is fine, could use more power. NAV prompts for reroute options. You definitely fill a parking spot, but it's a quick adjustment. I live in the city and parallel parking is fairly easy too.

Thanks for the input guys. I may wait until the new year to see if they miraculously announce Toyota's getting Android auto, otherwise intend to buy one. Hopefully I can hold out a while before a car seat is needed in truck. I'll probably buy new so I get what I want and have a good warranty.

Oh I have one more goofy question, what's the height to the tail gate when it's down? My 1st gen is 35" but has a small lift. Would help for knowing if I can still get in the parkade with a bike in the back.

Buy the Garmin. My Nav. works in my truck but I still prefer my Garmin to me it more user friendly and the truck doesnt have to put stopped to use it.

It sounds to me like you need a larger vehicle for carrying kids, dog, gear, etc. I would opt for something else with more power, better fuel economy and more size/comfort on the interior yet still getting about the same fuel economy. Full size is the way to go for your situation. The navigation system is damn near worthless for real time rerouting. I use my cell phone for this reason, there is no comparison from WAZE to entune for real time data.

Also the Third gen has given many of us some nagging issues which Toyota has been slow to acknowledge or fix (if at all)... I'd recommend a full size for your situation as there really is not much difference from say a F150 to a Tacoma when parking and driving that you wouldn't get used to very quickly. I came from a 1st gen Tacoma to a full sized GMC then to a third gen. Wishing I would have kept my full size now because it was issue free.

Kind of my thoughts as well. While I do enjoy driving my tacoma and it gets a lot of looks, if I had known where my life would be now when I got it, I would have just gotten something bigger. When I got it, we had one medium 40lb dog that we took camping with us. Now less than a year later, we still have her, we now have a larger 50lb as well, and my wife is 6 months preggers. It's going to be crowded for sure now.

Sorry no, no interest in buying a full size for the dozen times a year I'd need a larger back seat. I'd rather have a smaller truck for the other 350 days. The VW golf will be the primary baby carrier.

So it sounds like you already had your mind made up before coming in here then. Good luck with whatever route you choose.

You wouldn't regret a Tacoma! They are wonderful and awesome! A lot of people on here are babies and like to cry a lot so don't listen to them! I haven't had any trouble out of mine so far and couldn't be happier
