8 years in ems, I gained less then $2 an hour. Permant back injury, stress, I became over weight, ect. I worked metro boston, busy as fuck. I did 24's and would do 20-30 runs in that shift. The berating, the trash talk, and shit I received from management, not to mention the patients got me to to start to think about my future. I left, and haven't looked back. I loved what I did, but it didn't pay the bills.

Everyone realizes that the industry is grossly underpayed but nothing will ever change. EMS is a stepping stone to a RN, MD, or Permant fire department (still under payed)

My suggestion is to use your back ground, get back to school and get your RN. Got to pay hour bills, and RN's make great salaries, and with strong EMS back ground, you will get better first job options.

You can still work the bus..... Or get on a medflight crew. Need your RN and ems background though

On a Taco, replacing the blower motor takes 3 screws. On a BMW X5, it takes... more.

    In the WTF thread?

To all those that went to school or are not in high school or college (some limitations if you're a full time student I would think). Did you do any research prior to selecting a career field? Average pay is not a secret and if you make the choice because "it's something you want to do" then did you not agree to all of it?

    http://www.bls.gov/ooh/

The site above provides all sorts of labor data. I just don't understand the concept of spending 2, 4, 6 or 8 years in school (or really paying for any education without know the return) for a job and not knowing what to expect in terms of pay when you are finished.

I know I've changed careers because I wasn't happy with my pay and I'd do it again.

I lived in "rural America" actually. I drive 20 miles to work each day, 4 years ago it was it 30.

Yes, I would *like* to have some money sitting around for emergencies. A few thousand maybe, to cover things like car repairs or a new roof. Reality is I only have a few hundred. And that's no where near 1 family having more than 41% of the entire population of the US. That's far more than they need, and they even find loopholes in the law to avoid paying what they should. So, why shouldn't that money go back to the employees? You know, the people that actually do all the work for WalMart and keep the cash coming in for the owning family?

And this is exactly my point. You work your ass off in a difficult, stressful, dangerous job and even you barely reach the poverty level. My wife worked her ass off at the hospital, covering call-outs and vacation days, working 9 days straight sometimes. Worked until discs in her neck started rupturing from the weight of the bag she had to carry, but she only made $12/hr. That wouldn't be enough to support herself and family.

The whole job economy and pay scale is fucked.

I want to know where people that think Wal-Mart, etc employees *should* be working to support themselves? Lets take a look around my town, 30 miles in 3 directions are larger cities. Between those 3 cities there are:

    • 4 Wal-Marts
    • 3 Lowes
    • 3 Home Depots
    • At least 10 malls
    • Gas stations on every corner
    • over 100 bars, restaurants, and fast food places
    • 6 hospitals
    • 1 bankrupt electronics company (Endicott Interconnect)
    • empty IBM buildings
    • 1 lockheed martin plant (that loses contracts)
    • a handful of manufacturing companies
    • 5 colleges
So where are most of the jobs in this state? NY Can't be the only state in that kind of situation.

I've not read all the attached links so really not sure where the information above comes from or it's validity. However, I would be willing to make a bet that an 18 year old with ZERO debt and $10 in his pocket has more wealth than 25% of the population.

    ON EDIT:

So are you talking about the Walton family wealth (~$100B) or the net profits of Wal-Mart (~$16.5B/year)? In relation to the rest of US wealth ~$60T and the GDP ~$16.5T.
