Usually the case. However, a life of petty crimes should not garner a harsher sentence than one crime that widows a wife and leaves multiple children fatherless.

Yeah, no shit. Sometimes they just give them ridiculously long sentences just to fill any empty space in the prisons. I remember one kid we had at our prison got 7 years for stealing his mom's checkbook or some shit. Another was doing time because he didn't pay his child support.

I think most non-violent crimes shouldn't get prison sentences at all. Just a waste of taxpayer money. The whole pc 'corrections' hug-a-thug atmosphere is pretty much a complete joke. Often times inmates who might have been halfway decent kids if 'corrected' properly end up worse because they're put into an environment jam packed with all the other f&%#-ups and it just goes downhill from there.

Yeah, when you read the article you can see that a law that is similar to the one in California is in place there in Louisiana. There it is "4 strikes and life without parole" So it's not just the that guy stole a jacket, but that he has 3 other prior convictions of theft. Funny thing is, if enough people got tired of these laws costing us BILLIONS in tax dollars to keep them in prison, then we could simply petition for this law to be changed, or removed completely.

    THE BRIEF SAFE

The "Brief Safe" is an innovative diversion safe that can secure your cash, memory cards, documents, and other small valuables from inquisitive eyes and thieving hands, both at home and when you're traveling. Items can be hidden right under their noses with these specially-designed briefs which contain a fly-accessed 4"x10" hidden compartment with Velcro closure and realistic "special markings." Leave the "Brief Safe" in your laundry basket or washing machine at home, or in your suitcase in a hotel room - even the most hardened burglar or curious snoop will skid to a screeching halt as soon as they see these. Color white (and brown).

Ah, but then you are depending on a majority of the electorate to pull it's collective head out of it's ass. Such an occurrence is probably the rarest event known in the universe.

I agree with mostly all of this. Except here in Arkansas, we don't have empty spaces in our prisons. We have one of the worst recidivism rates in the country. From 2003-2007 it was around 47% IIRC.

Up until the very end of the article, it reads as if stealing the $159 jacket was the only crime this guy had ever committed. At the end it brings up Louisiana's 4-strikes law and mentions he had been previously convicted of robbery in the amount of $216. Robbery is a violent crime. So, this guy is a lifetime, violent criminal that committed a non-violent crime that got him put away for life. The article seemed to be intentionally misleading.

Yes, I am very aware of "x" strike laws. I don't particularly give a fuck about them. 4 convictions of petty theft should not equal a life sentence when a murder that widows a wife and deprives multiple children of a father only gets a couple decades of incarceration.

The article actually states that robbery is a non-violent crime. Don't know if that was a typo or misunderstanding on your part.

This, in the phillipines the punishment is "caning" & they start with a round, solid, green length of bamboo, its intact when they start beating the shit out of you & its in tatters & shredded when they're done... Its claimed that it hurts so much that most guys pass out after the first 5 or 10 smacks.... haha bet they don't repeat again...
