    Using an outhouse and old newspaper.

    Boiling water to take a hot bath.

    Hunting game or go hungry.

    Buying market fruit and veggies from a horse drawn wagon.

    Whitewashed walls.

    Starched shirts.

    And last but not least...a whole summer's day of entertainment from a pasture full of cow pods:
    1) playing stick ball with hard dried cow pods
    2) stomping in the fresh pods in bare feet
    3) throwing partly dried pods at your siblings & cousins (dry enough to pick up, wet enough on the inside to make a mess upon impact :D
