Grew up in Florida, lived in VA past 7 years for the Navy and now as a contractor. I've realized I dont plan on living out here long term at all.

What kind of things should I know about the areas to live out in Texas if I decide on moving? Been thinking Houston bc it's next to the beach, and not in the tornado area. I also work as an IT, still have a clearance and haven't heard of any bases around Houston that I could take advantage of it with so also need to do more research into that.

not much "beach" in the H-town area. Corpus is the closest that has decent beaches. And anywhere in TX has 'naders:crapstorm:

San Antonio is a good city, but pretty far from water if that's your litmus test. Actually for Tec, Austin is the king in Texas. Also cost of living is attractive in SA.

What makes you think the job market in Houston is down? Quick Google shows:
Texas cities were ranked in Forbes' lists of Best Cities for Jobs as follows: Big cities: #1 Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos, #3 Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, #4 San Antonio-New Braunfels, #5 Dallas-Plano-Irving.

    and
The Houston, TX job market is strong compared to the rest of the US. Over the last year, job postings in Houston, TX have declined by 19% relative to a national decline of 32%.

Searching the sites I use for jobs requiring clearances there were 2 out of 8 positions that'd apply to me to pick from. With there being more bases in San Antonio there's a lot more opportunities out there for me compared to Houston.

Seems like everyone I know in Texas wants to visit Arkansas. Much prettier up here and we have an Air Force base. Lots of pretty lakes and wilderness too. Just messing with you Texas guys. My wife and I love Texas.

If I were moving back to Texas, San Antonio is where I'd go. Good town, not as nuts as the other big cities. A couple hours from Corpus for beaches, but also right next to the hill country.

Austin would be a close second, or perhaps somewhere in the middle like San Marcos.

damn, now I want to go tubing.

Not to mention lots of great food. And margaritas. Miss it for sure.

Fun fact: For a while, Houston and San Antonio were duking it out for the title of Fattest City in America

I did not enjoy Houston. The food and nightlife were amazing, traffic and scenery were not. Commuting will slowly drive you insane there, and I mean that literally. By your second year you will be ready to mount your assault on bartertown.

    upload_2020-10-2_8-16-29.jpg

Dallas isnt much different in that regard - hell, if you can survive a year in Dallas, you can singlehandedly defend Bartertown. The 35 corridor surrounding Austin isn't much better.

If it were me, Fort Worth or San Antonio would be my choices, with preference to San Antonio. There is much better access to the fun parts of the state from there.

Austin has less assholes than Dallas and Houston.

So I guess we can use more of them?

Seriously, people are friendlier in these parts.

How much money do you have?

Most all of TX hunting is private. There is some public, mostly bird and archery. Fishing is just is great about anywhere.

Like Pintsize said, most land is private, but if you're in the market, the Hill Country is usually the most expensive but subjectively the prettiest, followed by the Caprock, RGV/South TX, Fort Davis area. The last few areas are pretty but desolate when it comes to water resources .

I knew a lot of texas was private, but I didn't realize it was that much. Total opposite of utah which is 40 something % public, which I really enjoyed.

I think Nevada is probably the state with the lowest percentage of private land, Texas has one of the highest

There i don’t know the exact amount of land public land, but I do personally hunt exclusively public here. If you want to hunt state hunting land you’ll need a annual public hunting permit that runs $50 ish for the year. East Texas has a lot, followed by a few places in the hill country. Again it’s mostly archery for whitetail deer and exotics and bird hunts for dove, duck, geese, turkey, and sand hill cranes.

    https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/hunt/public/

We have a draw system for hunts. Usually takes 1-4 years to draw a hunt. I drew an archery tag on a wildlife refuge and a later rifle tag on a wildlife refuge as well.

there’s also land on flood areas that takes a little more searching. And a few special permits that are unlimited.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but if you are explore for public land, avoid property with a purple post out front, unless you fixin to sleep with the worms!
