    Haha...not doing it...can't make me!
I am definately on par for a re gear...I went down to a 16" rim on Nitto Trail Grapplers with a 3" lift....and a manual tranny....AND I LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO! Those hills are a BITCH! I think my clutch is getting toasted, and im getting around 14MPG.

My truck is a dog until 3500 rpm, I think a lightweight flywheel should reduce some rotational mass....4.56...and of course a new clutch.

i'm definitely going 4:56 gears. Im not disappointed with the performance on my 35"s , but to reduce the wear and tear on other components of the drive train.

With 3.73 gears and 35's you are putting a lot of stress on all the drivetrain components. It takes more rpm to get moving and in return that puts more stress/wear on everything.

Think of it as a crawl box. Once you gear down you can crawl over things either idling or with very little throttle. Now switch bacl to the stock gearing and try to do the same obstacles. It'll take a lot more rpm/throttle to get over things. It's the same principle with the 35's but not as extreme.

With a manual I'd think it wouldn't be as obvious because you'd just alter your shifting.

You guys think it would it be possible to take the 4:10's from a 2.7l and put them in a v6 truck with the 3:73's stock? would that be any cheaper (junkyard front diff and rear axle?) than buying gears and installing them? Or are the housings totally different?

Based on the charts posted- looks like there is another option that no one is talking. 4.27. Now for my truck with 285 plus another 400 lbs (front bumper, rear bumper plus the skids),, I think that this could be a pretty good middle choice. Now , I asked EGGS and they are telling me that they don't cary them. Anyone else (reputable enough) carry them ???

yes its possible, I'm going to be doing it.... but for the front you need a new carrier for the 4.10's. Either one of the 3.90 FJ cruiser front carriers, or an ARB locker setup for 3.90up gears.
The Toyota 4.10's also wont fit the E-locker 8" rear diff in the TRD Offroad trucks, only the 8.4" rear.

Whats the deal with the front re-gear?

I went through the step by step guide to get a general price on 4wheelparts.com. I was able to chose rear 4.56 ring and pinion, ARB lockers F/B and installation kits. The option for the front gear is grayed out....just the website or does the taco not need attention in the front drive train?

It's my understanding that if you go with anything over 4.56's in the IFS, i.e. 4.88's you have to switch the carrier... truth? idk. I haven't done enough research. I also heard that 4runners at some point in time with some combination had stock 4.56's in the IFS which would swap right into the Tacoma IFS, that be a good junk yard find. Anyone have more info..?

What?? no way i have a 4cyl 4x4 with 245/75/16 and i find it luggs from a stop on a hill or towing my trailer when taking off and when i give it enough gas as the clutch comes out so it doesnt lugg then it just seems like its to much strain on the clutch so im worried about glazzing it. am i doing something wrong here?
