What most people are missing is that the whole plan was to downgrade vehicles and not actually spend money, but to reinvest so to speak, actually "earning" me money.

For the first year, (thanks to scholarships and grants) my only cost is going to be getting to school and/or getting a place near school. It will be cheaper to live at home and drive, but the two hours a day on the road may change my mind.

So, its not like I need extra money at this point. I'll definitely hold onto the Ranger and see what next year brings.

I understand what you are trying to do. I did something similar, but out of necessity, at the begining of the year. I had an 02 TRD 4x4 Tacoma, paid off, pimped, etc..... I sold it and after searching for a while, picked up a 92 4Runner. The difference is, I have access to another vehicle. I also bought it knowing that some repairs were needed. You really are taking a chance by buying an older vehicle. There just isn't any good way to guarantee that it won't have problems in the future.

I didn't vote, because I'm a little torn on the subject, but I can definately relate. If you're gonna purchase an older used vehicle, I think a Toyota is a good choice considering their reliabillity. Research the hell out of whatever you might buy and shop with patience.....it'll pay off in the end.
