Just a little info: I have a 2011 TRD Off Road PreRunner that's my daily driver but I'm toying with the idea of buying a 1st gen 4x4 to get into offroading with. I'm a novice, been offroading a few times with others but that's about it. Anyone have any recommendations for a certain year to buy or to avoid? I'm thinking of getting a 98-01 model.

That's funny. I have been thinking the exact same thing. I also have a 2011 DC TRD OR but am hesitant to take it off road yet. Been thinking of getting a Gen1 to take off road but it would also probably end up being a DD for my 16 year old son for a while (only way I could justify it to the wife ;)).

lol at all the 2nd gen owners coming back to 1st gen:rolleyes:

Really i dont think you could go wrong with any of em personally. It depends on if you want the E-locker and really what kinda look you want when it really comes down to it. No matter what tho...gonna be hard to find haha

And i have owned an 86 and 87 toyota trucks. Didn't have SFA on em but they were still great lil trucks. I loved them.

caged, camburg long travel, 50t leafpack (soon to be installed) light rack over cab, 5pt harnesses etc
go with a 85 or older so you can have a solid front axel, unless your looking to pre run

i’m not going back. i would keep my 2nd gen as a DD and i would make a 1st gen just a trail rig i would not care so much about body damage.

My friend had a '98 Regular cab with the 4 banger in it. It was 4x4, manual tranny. I bought my truck now because of how unstoppable that little truck was. Downside... if you are over 6 feet, you would want something larger ;)
