Thinking about either a 2022 Taco or 2022 Tundy, need advice

Do 4x8 sheets fit inside the hi top Sprinter or Transit vans? Those might be a better option for carrying building materials.

Oh there will be some mods all right
Go with the Tundy (you're not the only one to call them that) I test drove a third gen Tacoma I believe four times and I just could not get myself to like it. The back seat on a crewmax Tundra is so big and comfortable it makes you not want to ever be in the back of a midsize truck ever again. The garage thing is not a big a deal as you would think. For the longest time I thought my vehicle absolutely had to fit in the garage and then I just realized that parking outside isn't the end of the world. Also I used to have a second gen Tacoma and the gas mileage was just as bad as the tundra. Make sure you get a cool color when you get it :D

Meh, my kids all fit in the back seat of the Taco. They're 15, 12 and 10...my son is 5'9".

Is it the most comfortable for my son? No, but I don't care, he's a kid. If you're raising a child that can't handle being a little cramped in the back seat then how the heck are they going to deal with real life?

I just downsized into a Tacoma from a full-size Titan XD, and extensively cross-shopped Tundras before going with the smaller truck. From your perspective, these are relevant considerations:
    • Kids: They're gonna keep growing, and acquiring more stuff and friends you may have to haul around along the way. The back seat is pretty cramped for me in my double-cab at 5'8", but the seats are pretty comfy. Still, advantage Tundra, since you just have that much more real and perceived room. Even if you shift cargo into the Tacoma's bed, you lose some of that capacity.
    • Lumber: Let's face it, the Taco can do most of it no problem, albeit a little awkwardly, but it's just not as easy as a full-size truck where you just load it and go. If you do this with any frequency, go Tundra.
    • Transmission: Ugh. My automatic lugs when it drops to anything below about 1600 rpm at light throttle, but it's alleviated by using ethanol-free gas, the ect button, or just driving with a lead foot all the time. I've not heard any similar complaints out of the Tundra's transmission, so Tundra wins.
    • MPG: This is where the Tacoma's the undisputed winner. I do a ton of highway miles, and I'm getting as high as 24 indicated mpg in the smaller truck. You'll get like half that in the Tundra, especially with the crazy 4.30 rear axle ratio. HOWEVER, this is in part because you don't have, what is in my opinion, engine-killing b.s. like cylinder deactivation for better mileage. If you decide on a full-size truck, there's a lot of appeal to the Nissans and Tundras for this reason.
    • Safety: The bigger truck's probably safer, but it'd be worthwhile to compare crash tests.
Finally, an alternative you won't like is to keep your truck while prices and supply & demand are just crazy - I saw new Tacomas for sale with 10k markups, and while you don't lose a lot of value with these trucks, you will if the market corrects. I would honestly consider upgrading the Outback into something larger, and upgrading your ride later if that's an option.

I had a 2019 Tundra for a little while. It was kind of an impulse buy. I really like the truck overall, but didn't really need the space or the capabilities of the Tundra. It was big and comfy and the 5.7 V8 is a thing of beauty. BUT, it was tough to get more than 14 mpg, parking was often times a nightmare, and it just felt like driving a charter bus around town. I found that I didn't enjoy driving it like it did with my Tacomas, so I traded for my 2020. Now if I had kids or was towing heavy loads on the regular, I would've just learned to deal with it. Since that's not the case, the Tacoma is a better fit for me.

In your case, I would definitely check out the Tundra. The Crewmax will have plenty of room for the kids and you'll have some extra bed space. Just be prepared to have to search a bit more for a parking space and I wouldn't count on it fitting easily in any garage. Fuel economy is not going to be great, but the V8 is pretty sweet. If you decide to wait for a 2022 or later, the V8 won't be an option, but you'll have a more modern truck, for better or worse.

I figured I would jump in. I started off in Tacomaworld years ago. I loved all my tacomas. But I still visit all the time. Just like I do with 4runner forum. Had 2 4runner Pros and my last one 2020 AG I traded it in for my 21 LunaRock tundra Pro. I never had a full size truck. It’s only me and my wife. No kids. I traded the 4runner since my wife has a Acura suv. We did not need 2 of them. Since having all three my biggest gripe with my tundra Pro is the size of it. No issues parking it in the garage. Took it to OBX this year and Portland Maine. Awesome driving it but finding a parking spot can be a challenge. Also driving it with being so big. Do I need a full size truck I don’t. I’m tossing it around maybe going back to a 22 Tacoma Pro or 4runner Pro. I’m not going to lose money if I do. But I love the sound of this exhaust. It just takes a while to get use to the full size. All my friends that have gone with me in it love how big it is inside.

Not sure if this helps, but I was in your position a few months back. In California, with the crazy mark ups, the tacoma and tundra pro's were about the same price so I was leaning towards a tundra.

When I test drove both, I loved the tundra, but it's a big ass truck. I've had a '94 1500 for over a decade and I feel that it is easier to drive and maneuver than the tundra.

What made me decide on the tacoma was taking it in the dirt. The dealer took me to a small dirt field and let me go nuts with both. The tundra felt like a boat. I know a dirt field isn't the best gauge for an offroad trip, but it was night and day between the trucks.

If long road trips are ahead, I'd go tundra. For anything else, the tacoma will hold up.

My tacoma has already been places that it should not have gone, even without a lift kit, and has made it through without a scratch. The tundra would not have.

The tacoma also fits 2 adults, a kid and 2 large dogs without any issues. The tundra would be alot more roomy, but as long as you're comfortable, who cares. Jk

Also gas. My company predicts that gas sales will more than double in the next year, which means prices are going to keep going up. That electric 150 is looking a lot prettier every meeting we have.

I just realized that there were more replies. Sorry for the delay.

Lots of great info in this thread. Thanks for all the help.

    Now that I know that:

    A) the Tundy will be all new in 2022
    B) they're zero inventory

I'm going to wait until at least 2023.

When I have my 2009 Taco serviced this winter, I'm going to try to rent a Tundy from the asshole dealership that I go to. I'll take it home, park it in the garage, take the kids to school with it, take it to work, etc.

That should be a good test!

The stories I'm hearing about dealers charging $10,000 over MSRP...

Does this apply to on-lot vehicles, or factory orders as well?

    Thanks.

Probably until the shortage of computer chips get resolved or they change their business model. Without the inventory, they can't sell anything so they add costs to the vehicles that they do have to make up for the lack of sales. It's gonna be a while. I just bit the bullet and paid it.

I really liked my 2001 tundra, but after 19 years, and bad gas mileage it was time to get something new. I've had toyota compact 4x4 pickups since 78, so i'm kind of biased. I test drove the ranger, and nissan at the time...really didn't like some things either had vs the tundra i had been driving. Even test drove a 4 cylinder tacoma that felt more solid than the other two, but it had no power. Finally settled on the v6 tacoma. Except for a choppier ride to get use to, i feel i made the right decision. Really happy with this truck more, and more every day.

Is it just me or does a Tundy sound like something a 4 year old would play with in his sand box. Come on men Tundra !!!!!

If you are offroading a lot get the Tacoma. The smaller size and light weight makes all the difference. Heavy rigs sink and my taco floats.

If you are street driving and hauling loads get the Tundra. The extra power and capacity will be beneficial.

If you want back seat room there is no comparison between a Tacoma and a full-size truck. When my kids were teenagers and growing I had a full sized truck. Now they are in college and it’s usually just me and or my wife and the Tacoma works well for the 2 of us.

With the Tacoma plant being in Baja, I'd say forever?
