Thinking about getting a 2nd gen, how reliable are they?

I currently have a 97 1st gen with 232,000 miles on it and it runs like new. I am thinking of trading it in on a 2nd gen Tundra or Tacoma. Preferably a used one since brand new ones are out of my price range. I really want a Tundra but after some research, they seem to have a lot of problems. Especially the air injection pumps which are $1100 a piece and last about 50k before they crap out. There are also complaints of the 6-speed autos crapping out, tailgates buckling in with only 200 lbs on them, etc. So maybe I should stick with the Tacoma. I can't find any info on air injection problems with the 4.0, even though it is used in the Tundra and has problems in that application. I only found a couple instances where the Tacoma's tailgate is flimsy although I'm not really worried about that. Any other common problems these trucks have? All in all, they are looking much better than the Tundra.

Motor mounts collapsing into the frame on the 05's primarily. The six speed manuals have clutch issues. There are several threads on here you should read first. Search for 05 motor mount, throw out bearing.

I have had my 06 since december, it has 50k on it now. So far I have noisy transmission, chirping throw out bearing to deal with. If I could do it again, the only thing I would change is I would buy an automatic.

I have 80k on my '05. Bought it brand new and its been on many trips camping in and out of state. Only problems I have had are from mods but never an issue with my truck EVER.

I'm just passing 25k miles on my '08 PreRunner double cab. This was the first vehicle I bought brand new from the dealership and I'm absolutely thrilled with it! My only regret is not discovering TW website before I bought it. I probably would have gone with the off-road packaged instead of the sport. But I have no complaints besides that. Vehicle runs strong and more than satisfied my needs/wants. The aftermarket options are only limited by the funds in the bank account!

There should be plenty of quality pre-owned Tacomas out there. Especially if you're still in the Phoenix area. Are you looking into a regular cab, access, or double? PreRunner or 4x4?

my .02: stick with what you have! I sold off my 95 with 220k on it and bought a 2nd generation. There are some physical differences of course but if you have a truck that runs well, keep it! I wish that I had...

I'm actually looking for a double cab, maybe 05-08. How common are the motor mount failures? Was there a recall for this? How is Toyota handling it? My current Tacoma is a regular cab and is just too small.

the motor mount problem affected '05 and some '06 I beleive. I do not know if there is coverage for it from Toyota. The 2nd gens are sweet if you are looking for more room. I had a 2000 reg cab and got a 2008 double cab. I cannot beleive how much freking room I have now. I have the auto and I would only stay with them. I don't want to deal with the throwout bearing problems with the manuals.

here is a thread on the frame mounts: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/21849-05-motor-mounts-failed-failing.html
