I checked one out at shooters world and the action was super rough, the stock was quirky and the barrel had this dumb looking vent ribbing on it. I then checked out the 870 and it was so much better. Actions was smooth as butter and felt more like a shotgun should. I would check out the 887 before you buy one, it's not as cool as it looks.

I think I've made my decision based on how I'm going to set the gun up for the future. I'm going with the remington 870 express tactiacl gray, then I'll add the tactical pistol grip and stock.

I did play with the 887 (full length) at the NRA convention. I really liked the feel, yes its very different than what we are all use to. I would love to get one out on the range (desert) before I bought one. The 870 is an awesome shotgun and there is a thousand different ways to customize it they way you want it. I think you will be very happy with it.

One thing I say about all firearms.... buy what is most comfortable to YOU, that's all that matters.

Maybe I got one that was a little more rough and just needed some breaking in? Shooting one on the range would be awesome though.

What ever you get, try to get the Knoxx SpecOps stock. Fantastic is the only way to describe it. My wife doesn't even have an issue shooting it with 3" shells loaded with 00 buckshot. She actually prefers to shoot the shotgun to a 9mm pistol.

I haven't been to SW in a long time. They use to be terrible and all the "rental" weapons were poorly maintained. How are they now?

Don't know, I never rent guns there. I go to Scottsdale gun club, but I know the SW was bought out by another shop so it may be better now?

    Speeks,

I'll have to look into it more. I was looking at the Speed Feed III too so we will have to see what happens.

Yep that's the one, just with a muzzle break on it for door breaching and well nocking people in the face or chest if things get ugly :D

Expect the best, prepare for the worst.

Scottsdale Gun Club actually sells their own off brand of shotguns. All of the parts are from FN Tactical but it's just assembled by SGC. Can't beat the price for a FN.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
870 was my first gun not quite 20 years ago. i got the parkerized KMart model...thinking it was less than $200 at the time. i can't begin to estimate how many rounds have been through the gun in the past two decades. lots & lots of plinking, hunting and clays through my formative years. the action only gets better with usage. the gun has never been babied and is quite gruesome looking these days, but functions perfectly. I've taken it on birdhunts and it's been the butt of a few jokes from the benelli/beretta/high end guys...till we start hunting. there is most certainly a reason why it's the most popular shotgun in the world. keep it oiled, throw a patch or two trough it every once & again and it will give a lifetime of service. now i want to shoot it...haven't had it out in a while:)

i don't think you can go wrong with a mossberger either. i would love to get my hands on a 930SPX. maybe someday. there are two reasons why i like the 870 better than a 500 though. first is safety placement. it's nice that the 'berg's is easily visible, but the remington has a safety that anyone who's ever handled long guns will be familiar with, and doesn't require grip movement to enguage/disenguage. i can never seem to get comfortable with a top safety for some reason. i also think that the action on the 870s is smoother. mine is like butter after years of abuse. aftermarket support is prettymuch equal from what i have found for both models. i have considered several times over turning mine into a zombie slayer, but i just can never talk myself into rebuilding the old girl. i like it the way it is...a smiple, all around, super dependable, beat-up gun that has never let me down.

good luck with the build, and keep us updated on progress please.

Now I would go join just for that...be able to take some tactical classes in room clearing and active shooter situations. Oh I just got goosebumps thinking about it!
