Make sure you test drive as much as possible.

Can anyone explain how the ECT program is supposed to help all this hunting that the new transmission does? Mine only has 1400 miles on it but this truck is not nearly as nice to drive as the Gen 2 trucks I've had.

ETC supposedly changes shift points so you can say in the powerband/ride the gear longer before it shifts. I personally don't have too much issue with mine, it does like to bog down a bit sometimes so I just give it a bit more gas and it downshifts no problem.

ect is made for towing, it holds gears longer and uses the engine to help brake.

Mine hunts all over the place on the FWY and you can feel it switching back and forth quite a bit but......I have to say I do live in a hilly area so there are a lot of load changes on the engine/transmission from that. I don't remember my '15 having as much trouble though and the tire sizes were the same. I have not tried the ECT at all yet I have just been leaving it in 5 on the FWY and 4 on the street which helps some.

Just out of curiosity, what are they giving you for the 12? How much are they selling the 17 for?

Bottom line, though, life is short, get what you want.

try to be aggressive on the gas for a couple days, should learn your habits and shift a little later

Is it accurate that this trans does have some "learning" to it and it will change with a few thousand miles on it?

it will change every day depending on how you drive, when i go from driving on the beach to back on pavement it shifts so early and feels sluggish, then after driving it aggressively for a couple miles it relearns your driving and will shift later

I can't comment on whether it is right for you but make sure they are giving you a great deal. A new 18 can be had (depending on options) for roughly $33-36K + TTL with some good haggling. Make sure you don't overpay!

Alright thanks.....This thing is kind of a mystery so far....That's why I'm holding off on saying it's an improvement over gen2 or not. I need some more time to mess with it.
I can say one thing for sure at this point.....I do not have any use for that TSS and I never use it after trying it out a couple of times. I don't like the feeling of having something taking over control of the brakes for me and the first time it happened it pissed me off...The second time it happened it got shut off.

That's a really nice Gen2 truck you have, I've always liked them in the silver. I have a 2016 TRD OR DC and I really like it. Although I have less than 20000 miles on it, it hasn't had any of the problems that you read about on here. Coming from a 2012 Tundra there was a little bit of adjustment period for me however I really enjoy driving my Tacoma and look forward to ever time I do. Either way you'll still be making a good decision sticking with a Tacoma. Good Luck. Oh and test drive like others have recommened, do it more than once. Some dealers will actually let you keep a used Truck for a day or two so you can make sure it's what you want. That way you won't have to come back here on the World and bitch because there's something you don't like about it.

Punch that gas pedal at 35 mph and enjoy the launch. 3rd gen has 18% more hp than 2nd gen.
    And its quite noticeable.
After mine had broken in I hit it and was like WTF !

I think the AT issues are blown out of proportion here. My 2015 Cherokee Trail Hawk was garbage compared to the Tacoma. That had the 9 speed and it was also hunting for gears and would stay in 3rd gear at 2mph, talk about bogging down (which was Jeeps solution to them breaking their 2nd gear). It felt like the clutch was always slipping. That is why I got rid of it. I didnt feel safe make turns in traffic and being able to accelerate.

3rd gen has a double overdrive transmission, of course it's going to shift more than a second gen...

I have zero issues with mine. I am mainly flat terrain. I think the tranny likes to shift in hilly/mountainous regions more from what I read. Colorado is 8 speed and other trucks 10 speed. It's a thing of the times. Technology changes and old thinking/habits are hard to break. Who cares if it shifts more often ?

If you let the AT do its thing, with the atkinson cycle engine, you can nurse some pretty decent fuel mileage out of it. I had a much less capable CUV that had worse mileage then this. But, I am old and cheap. This might not excite some people as much as it excites me.
