That is why I would buy one and why I bought the tacoma. There is a reason both are top 10 resale value. They stick with what works, where as other manfuacturers keep introducing tech/powetrain changes that eats away at reliability and only increases costs.

Toyota is being very conservative with how it squeezes out more MPG so I'd expect them to make cuts in other areas before they impact the power train and potentially ding their record for reputation.

It is my understanding that they are going with really thin auto glass on all models to save weight, so we could see them foregoing spare tires, jacks, etc.. to cut weight.

Bought my wife a '16 4Runner SR5 premium and we absolutely love it. I like driving it because the ride is so much better than my Tacoma (95K on stock suspension is part of the reason). I wouldn't mind it for a daily driver. As you mention, you can get quite a bit of space by folding the seats down.

    I didn't realize Toyota offered a 2wd option for the 4Runner. I don't think local dealer ever carries a 2wd.

I tried to trade my 16 taco on a 19 4runner. I worked out a price , signed a purchase order, put a grand down cash for a deposit. They didn't have the 4runner I wanted in stock but said they could order it for me but it would be 2 to 3 months to come in. 3 weeks later the sales slimeball calls me back and says we can't honor that price , we made a mistake and need a couple more grand for the same 4runner 3 weeks after i signed a purchase order and putting a $1000 deposit down . Needless to say I went and got my deposit back. I hate Toyota dealers and the scum bag games they play.

You keep saying this, but Toyota just keeps selling them. I've owned all 3 generations and the 3rd gen is by far superior, it's not even close. The 2nd gen has more low end torque but in every other area it's inferior.

I've got 'em both, see sig. On the older generation the 4Runner is just a better truck in every way. It's my understanding the newer Tacoma has been greatly improved. I plan to buy one soon when I upgrade my 4Runner. Just my 2 cents.

The factory transmission tune for the Tacoma is dull, but you can consistently achieve ~22 MPG tanks in mixed use if not heavily modded and/or towing. I just averaged 24.5 MPG over 1000 miles of highway. Do I drive it like a Prius? Sometimes, LOL.

If you need a bed ,get a truck. If you don’t get a 4runner. If you don’t want all the TSS bs look for a lightly used 17-18 to avoid all that as there relatively the same vehicle. I had a 2011 and loved it. My dealer quoted me a brand new 2019 Off-Road at 34.5k just to give you an idea of pricing.

Sounds like you don't need an offroad capable truck. Consider looking at the Explorer ST.... Lots of performance and more creature comforts.

If I ever replace my Tacoma it will be a 4 Runner. For my needs it would work out better for me. I already have a trailer to haul anything big and beside the 4 Runners look awesome moded out.

OP. If your truck is paid off and in good condition, just keep it and add a toy like I did.

That being said, my wife just got a 2019 4Runner TRD-OR Premium. We got it for $36,017 before tax. She officially has a nicer truck than me now.

Also, the 4Runner has the 4.0 (Slightly different) but it's essentially the same truck as the 2nd Gen Tacoma. So if you do your own maintenance, it shouldn't be much of a big change.

Good luck, let us know what you end up with! Also, take a look at the TRD-OR Premium if you don't really need all the crazy Pro stuff. Saved us like $10k and it has leather.

I like low end torque over everything else, but thats because I basically only use the truck for offroading now. I don't need a daily driver because I drive a service truck for work.
