I feel completely opposite. The Tacoma interior has a higher degree of hard plastic surfaces but I didn't find them much different than the silver painted 4Runner HVAC/stereo surround. The pros of the 4Runner are the nicer door panels, seat material (more durable) and maybe the center console material.

The steering wheels are no different than what was in 05-11 Tacos which to me over the years become super slick. Personal preference.

The 4th gen dashboards are well-known to crack and fall apart as well. I haven't seen the Tacoma see the same issue.

Overall though the 4Runner would get my pick just because I like my 2UZ-FE so much.

If you can get away with not needing a bed or making too much sacrifices for the 4Runner, go for it. When I sold my 2017 Tacoma, I really wanted to get the 4Runner and make it work. Unfortunately with my activities (heavy spearfishing, fishing, and hunting) I throw so much dirty and disgusting things in my bed that I just couldn't do without one. I thought about getting the 4Runner and adding that tow hitch carrier to carry some stuff, but there was just too much working around a bed for me. I picked up my current 2014 and never regretted it.

@TacomaSport86 and @bevans , I agree, the 3.5 engine and auto trans just didn't do it for me. I loved everything about the 3rd Gen except the drivetrain and it just bothered me way too much with little support from Toyota (shift enhancements flashings were worthless). I'd gladly sacrifice higher hp (at higher RPM) for more low end torque. Plus we have the supercharger option still.

Your dealer is lying. Texas new car sales tax is 6.25 in my county.

Correct, I think vehicle sales tax is 6.25%. My father was going to buy my brother a brand new Tacoma and have the dealership down here do all the title/registration work for him At his residence in Washington State. Apparently he has a city and a state tax that equal like an additional 9% to the vehicle. But he was going to buy it here and we were going to drive it up. Dealership took my dad's deposit, ordered the truck, didn't call my dad then sold it and tried to order him another before we needed it. Was a big mess. That was Don McGill Toyota of Katy. Would not recommend to any Houston, Texas buyers.

Yeah we were going to go to Gullo in Conroe because my Brother in Law got their truck (identitcal just black) for $36,500. So we showed Fred Haas that number and they beat it.

That's either a design thing or a quality control thing. The Japan vs Mexico thing is just assembly, other companies are putting in bids to make the interior parts. That's why some interior trim plastics are "black" but not the same "black" because multiple companies make multiple pieces. The plants in Japan & Mexico just put the parts together.

Lucky for me, My Truck was made in San Antonio, Texas.

I went to my local dealership and got a price on a 4runner ,signed a purchase order and put a grand down. It would have to have been allocated which they said would take a few months. 3 weeks later my sales slimeball at Burdick Toyota in Cicero NY calls back and says we cant honor that price that we had a signed purchase order on and we need way more money and to resign etc. I went and got my deposit back. That's not how you do business. I hate car dealers.

    I’ve had several Tacoma’s. I also have a 2016 4Runner Trail Premium.

Having a truck is really indispensable in many scenarios. Runner and utility trailer covers most of the bases but the truck is really more convenient.

My backseat is really for my dog 95% of the time so the truck works for me. Now that I have a cherry 2015 Tacoma, I’ll likely sell my 4Runner.

That blows. I would not do business with them. Have you tried shopping nearby states?
