I found a pretty nice example of a well taken care of first gen.

I bought my 3rd gen with the intention of keeping it forever but for some reason having a 30k asset that I use for truck things and putting nearly 20k miles on a year is kind of unsettling to me

    So what you guys think

2003 Xtracab 4x4 v6 TRD Offroad with 77k miles manual transmission listed for 12.5k

If the frame is in good shape I think I’m going to sell my truck if anyone is interested haha

I have both a 1st gen and a 3rd gen and I wouldnt ditch my 3rd gen if I had to make the choice out of the two.

Do what you want. I can’t imagine going back to a 1st gen. As cool as the truck was back then, the 3rd gen is light years ahead on power, comfort and safety.

Also consider it’s a 17 year old truck. Things will start wearing and I’d bet you will get sick of fixing it up or addressing rattles and squeaks.

This. I'm a 1st Gen guy. Put several hundreds of thousand miles on those trucks and feel like I know them inside and out.

I actually purchased a 2010 then went back to the 1st Gen until last Dec when I picked up a 19.

With that being said, I dont think I could go back to daily driving a 1st Gen.

My best case scenario would be to actually own both. 1st Gen to trail/drive around town and 3rd Gen to somewhat daily.

I loved my 1st Gen but there is no way I would ever sell my 3rd Gen to go back.

20k miles a year is 20k miles a year, regardless of which generation you're driving. Now, if you were making the case to switch to an eco box, that'd make much more sense. Make the switch if you want, but switching to an older, higher miles, truck isn't going to make more sense practically, especially since you're already in the 3rd generation, and going to take the loss.

A 1st Gen would make a great side piece. Take it out when you want to hoon it.

Yeah, 3rd Gens or any other new car is expensive. That said, 3rd Gens are about average in cost these days.

Although, you should do what makes you happy.

It’s kind of funny that a lot of you guys that answered have 6MT’s

I kind of wish I would have got a 6MT, and occasionally an access cab but now that I’m already in the 2018, I feel like a brat buying another almost brand new truck

After riding the back of old school ext cabs, sitting sideways, the AC is plush by comparison. My teenage daughters don't mind it at all. I would enjoy taking a ride back there, but no one wants to drive the Taco. :notsure:

    IMVHO, it is roomy:

In the DC, you only gain about 8in to loose 13in of bed length?

I also don't understand why Toyota doesn't do some small batches of DCLB MTs a couple times per year.

1st gen has the nostalgia/coolness factor, I get it, but the 3rd gen is just a better truck in almost every way. I say this having owned a '95 some years ago.

I had a 1st gen a couple of years ago that I sold to a buddy of mine, I still see him go by and nostalgia kicks in, I would love to buy it back from him and have it as a side car for the weekends, but I would never change my 3rd gen for it, just because it's way more comfortable for short and long trips, has a lot of gadgets that I could no see myself loosing and the biggest reason is that my new car is a lot more reliable than a 20+ year old car.

I would get the 1st gen if it was completely rust free and has a good maintenance record. I got sick of constant repairs and rust upkeep on my 1st gen.. If I didn't live in the rust belt I don't think I would have even considered a new third gen. When I calculated what I put into my 1st gen over 4 years in repairs etc., I think it about breaks even on the interest/depreciation of a new Taco.

I would just do it. YOLO and all that. You will lose less now than if you decide to later.

But make sure it’s what you want. Manual is cool and all, but doesn’t work for some people. I do miss being more comfortable in traffic jams, being able to eat/drink while driving, and typically getting better MPG. But for me, pro’s far outweigh the con’s.

It would be great as a beater...but most of us in this section of TW don’t have vehicles that old.

Stuff wears out. Seals degrade, leaks occur, metal rusts. Can’t speak to your financial situation, but I wouldn’t take $14,000 cash to give up my ‘17 SR5 and start driving a 15-year-old Tacoma. I kept my last truck for 19 years, and I’m hoping to get the same out of my current truck. Either way, you’ll make a good choice by driving a Tacoma, I think.
