Definitely, and you can still buy plenty of toys for the runner, check out the 4runner section on the site

...how would a 4runner be any more practical than a double cab truck?

You can do MORE with the truck...

I forgot to mention I have 2 dogs, thought it would be easier to drive around with the dogs in the back...

Having two dogs is a reason to keep the truck over a 4runner IMO.

It'd be a hard choice for me. I'm in love with the newest 4runners. If I ever buy an suv, this would be what I'd buy!

Put a bestop on the truck bed in case of weather and ride the dogs back there (properly secured of course). You can hose out a truckbed. Good luck hosing out the back of the 4R.

I was thinking harnesses and leash short enough they can't jump out, secured to a d-ring. I love dogs and get pissed when I see them free-riding in pickup beds. They're gonna die :(

I run a ratchet strap across the bed from the bed rail tie downs, and thread a short leash onto it. That way my dogs can run from side to side in the bed, but cannot jump over the side

Stick on hood scoop from Autozone.
Do you use your bed regularly? If not, get a 4Runner. If you need the bed, keep the Tacoma.

But if they do jump out, they'll be hanging on the side of the truck (scratching it in the process) unless you have a REALLY short leash.

Right, and the harness will keep them from hanging themselves. At worst, they'll have some bumps and bruises.

It's weird, i love my dogs more than anything but i let them ride in the box without being tied up. It's only around town or while offroading and never on the highway and I also drive super careful while they're back there, but two years later they haven't died. :(
