Hopefully you are aware of the epidemic of hemi valve lifter & camshaft wear failures:

I'm the wrong person to ask about keeping or selling a Dodge product.

I've only owned two POS vehicles that purchased new during the past almost 40years. One was a Dodge and the other was a Chevy. These two manufacture will never take another penny out of my pocket.

Now that I have fully disclosed my disgust for Dodge products.

Sell the darn thing and buy a truck that will take care of you, even if you don't take of it.

BTW I have a travel trailer and it tows fine in Texas, but I just picked up an OV turbo kit from a member because, while it will tow fine in the mountains, I don't want to listen to the engine scream the entire time. I towed my 86 GTI and a full bed load from Texas to 9000 ft in Colorado, and there were times 40-50mph was probably about top speed. I wasn't worried about living in the high rpms, the motor can take it, but I just didn't want to listen to it. So decide how much towing you're going to do and what that may be like. Now I tow a trailmanor that's about 3000lbs and it tows easier (I have 4.88 gears now), but I haven't tried elevation yet. I still think it won't be that great till I get the turbo in. I'm also looking at swapping in some Lexus seats for more comfort, but it depends on your philosophy. I buy platforms to turn them into what I want and keep them for at least 10 years, and most people don't want to go through that labor.

Fully understand Dodge’s/Chrysler’s past and knew it going in when buying my truck. That said, I did extensive research before buying it and it appears that ever since Ram separated from the Dodge brand the quality has gone up significantly. Thousands of old Rams on the road well past 200k, even 300k miles with zero issues. Also aware of the lifter/cam issues on older Hemis and yes there is a preventive measure by using a different type of synthetic oil. So far my Hemi has been beyond awesome.

In any case this thread was not so much about the reliability of Ram but rather about the decision process on whether to downsize to a mid size so that I can drive a manual, and Tacoma just happens to be the only one out there that offers it. That said after all these replies I figured I’m better off keeping the Ram as I don’t want to give up the space, power and utility I’d lose by downsizing. I appreciate the replies

Jeep gladiator also offers a 6 speed. It’s roomier than the Tacoma.

i traded in my '17 ram for a '21 tacoma....i miss it already.....the coma has zero power and shifts all over the place real weird like.... just forget about passing or merging....plus, because these things aren't exactly eye candy right off the lot you better be ready to throw a few grand in mods at it

I had a similar Ram before the Tacoma. The Ram always had electrical issues. But, the get up and go was great in the Ram. Having said that, i prefer the tacoma because its smaller, and i offroad often. The Tacoma deffinately wont have the balls like the ram, but i got used to it.

Interesting… I was hoping to hear from a few of you who downsized. I fully realize there’d be a drop in power but was hoping that driving the manual would make up for it.
Ive got around $3k already in mods on my Ram

Also, i never ever have noticed the transmission issues some of these owners talk about. Mine runs and shifts just fine.

I don’t know man. My taco is a beast when passing or merging. Not once I felt like it lacked power, stock or tuned.

So do all the AT tacos that I drove. Also, 2 of my buddies are very happy with their ATs. It’s definitely overblown on TW.

MT Tacoma has plenty of power to get around. I really don’t understand what most of these people are talking about.

Those prices seem a tad high. My new 2021 TRD off road was MSRP at 37k, 42k out the door this past weekend. Mine was just 2WD though, but if the 4WD ones you see are starting at 43k? Yeah that seems high, must be due to the shortage?

edit: the TRD OR has some sweet looking LED lights. Coolest lights I’ve ever had on a vehicle

    Keep the Ram.

We have Rams in our work truck fleet. Mainly diesels. Some newer 1500s with the hemi.

No issues…comfy, roomy and they get slightly better mileage compared to the taco.

If I had to keep just one truck, I’d keep the work Ram. 2016 cummins ccsb 3500 Laramie, 145k miles. Zero issues. Due to trade it in this summer.

We bought a fleet of 2019 and 2020 hemis for our non construction staff and we’re putting 2 to 3k miles a month on them with no issues.

I love my Tacoma, but the two trucks really have two different purposes.

Trade your current Ram for a Ram 3500 diesel single cab DRW 4x4.

They're talking about comparing a truck with a Camry engine to a truck with a muscle car hemi engine. And in terms of power there really is no comparison.

    o_O

Dude, this ram tried to pass me once and he was very surprised. Camry engine... haha.

If we talking about low end torque/towing, sure. On the street taco has plenty of power and keeps up with the ram easily, I have experience.

The only vehicles I stay away from are Tesla’s and actual sports cars. Everything else, pfft. I’m down.
