Move out of the city then you won't have to deal with traffic. Also i drove 300 miles to even find a used manual 2nd gen.

You also have to weigh what bed, cab and trim configurations are available in manuals, some configuration are not available.

Decide what's most important for you, as it stands, you can get all configs with an AT.

Bed and cab space is more important in my decision making process, besides I already have a vehicle with a manual, don't need another.

Why are people saying this? I can build a Tacoma on toyota.com right now with AC and OR with a manual transmission. I thought the only cab configuration that doesn't come with MT is DCLB because of the longer wheelbase (although I wish it did).

While I would love to have a manual, they aren't available in the ORDCLB like mine. LB was a must for me. That said the S mode almost gives you the same driving experience as the manual without having the clutch. There are some off-road situations where the clutch is going to give you the "touch" you need/desire, but the auto is very capable. I use a combination of ECT, S mode, and Drive. I've found that each method has nuances. I can definitely achieve the best mileage with regular Drive, but it requires finding the sweet spot with the peddle. There are little things you can do to get the computer to respond differently (i.e. stepping on it then lightly letting off until the gears downshift slightly). It sometimes feels like there are gears within gears. I'm finding that this engine/transmission is built with hidden/subtle levels of torque and power that come alive when you aren't trying to lead foot it into the traditional power response. It's like the computer is trying to train you to drive differently. This is where the hidden better mileage lives. But occasionally (ok, sometimes frequently) I don't want to play the computer game so I just hit ECT, or go into S mode knowing I'm going to lose some mileage.

Driving a manual involves a few hours of learning it once in your life, and after that it's pretty much second nature. I've been driving manual vehicles almost exclusively for 30 years and honestly I rarely ever even think about it while I'm driving -- is as ingrained in me as much as using my arm to lift a fork to my mouth. Even in traffic... unless you have a crazy heavy clutch or bad knee it's no problem at all.

Thanks. My mistake. Toyota.com was deselecting OR when I selected MT. That sucks.

I say put the truck in drive, leave the ECT off, get used to the way it drives, and stop overthinking it.

Almost 20K miles on my 2016 TRDORDCB 4x4 MT. My fuel mileage has actually gone up to almost 23 MPG since they changed over to summer blend gas here (it was ~20.5-21 throughout the winter). I tend to shift between 3K and 3.5K RPMs always, but it's still a heck of a lot of fun to drive.

The only reason I bought this truck was because of the manual. The resale value on these will be killer. I personally waited 5 months for mine when they had a identical truck with an auto in stock. If they stop making the manual in the future you'll be driving a unicorn

...^^^... I am 99.999% manual guy ... but heavy city driving makes me go "automatic".

So let it be written .. So let it be done.

Who cares about mileage? Manuals are where the fun starts. Manuals are to be driven with little concern for anything but being one with the truck and the road. Mileage is a secondary concern. OP should get a manual.

I love my manual trans. The shifting is firm and positive and it will creep well in first gear. I am teaching my son how to drive a manual in my Tacoma (we tried my RSX but I feel it will be easier in the Toyota). I spent many years commuting in a 5-sp Honda CRX in heavy stop and go traffic and it never really bothered me so rowing the gears in traffic was not ever a consideration for my choice. I shift about 2.2K RPM and it pulls well throughout the range. I really don't ever hammer on it as it's a truck and I have my RSX for that kind of thing anyway.
If you want a stick, go for it and trade for one, you may lose a couple $K but you get what you want. This was my first brand new vehicle since '96 so I plan on keeping it for a long time so I ordered exactly what I wanted. Long term I doubt having a manual in it will hurt the resale anyway. You may have to wait a bit for the right person but they will be out there and may be willing to come a fair distance to get a stick.

Op get a manual 16 v6, you two need one as well @smitty99 @TacoJohn
13k miles of thorough satisfaction, I can pull 23-25mpg on trips coasting hills and stops in neutral. 21 mpg average over 13k. If I had the same 6th gear as the auto I could get 26-27 mpg pretty easy

I agree. Love the manual but the long bed is a higher priority for me. I will be ordering a long bed soon because that extra foot of bed is valuable (since I sleep in my truck quite often in the summer). If I were a millionaire I would pay a shop to fab-up a manual in the long bed. That would be the ideal truck!

I see where OPs hate for the auto is coming from. But I would agree with @KB Voodoo , you just have to drive it a bit and get used to giving the truck what it wants.
Don't fight it. And if you want the extra power on occasion, use the ECT button.

One thing that I noticed from this truck was that it is very hard to feel acceleration. Coming from a 3rd gen 4Runner 2.7. I would feel the 2.7 give its full power and pull but I would see my tachometer and I was barely going 60mph. Now accelerate with the taco and before you know it you are going 80mph. My 4Runner feels like it pulls harder but in reality it doesn't. These new tacos pull pretty hard but you actually don't feel it.

Ummmm, if you are at 5500 rpms in 4th, you are going way faster than 90mph. Your probably going about 110mph....
