Perhaps then you should figure this stuff solo, without going on the internet.

My bad. Your comment was super helpful. You’re right, I’m about to be a dad so I should stop using trucks.

“Sorry babe, I can’t do the roof this year. A guy on the internet said I need to buy a minivan so we’re going to have to pay someone with a truck to do it.”

I bought a foreclosure and have renovated the entire inside. I’m now onto the outside. My life isn’t going to stop because I have a kid. Yea it’ll change. Yea I won’t be able to play as much in the beginning. But no, I can’t just ignore life because I have a kid. I still need to do the roof and siding and a shit ton of yard work and repair a lot of rot on the outside. That’s not going to change.

It’s Tacoma World where most people probably don’t use their trucks as trucks.
A safe family vehicle? He’s not trying to get a 88 pickup. Most tacomas are double cabs and by extension, family vehicles. There’s nothing wrong with a taco.

I'd say you don't need a truck, not another one. You certainly are not going to find a better Tacoma than the one you already have. 4th gen might be cool, but the Crown might do what 90% of potential 4G owners would ever do with the truck, and might do it better like people hauling. You already have other vehicles, so your truck doesn't need to accommodate the family. If you really want or need another truck I'd recommend a fullsize regular cab, more bed space for more truck things. The new Tundra would probably make for a good family rig, but is that what you need? Minivans are more practical and easier to park than a crew cab fullsize.

And you sound like half the other guys in this thread… instead of answering what I was asking, y’all want to jump in and start throwing out life advice and telling me how I don’t need what I need.

I’m not that young and I’m happy to compare credentials if you want to get in a pissing match in order to prove that I need a truck. But I really really really don’t understand your original patronizing comment or the push for me to get an SUV.

I have a brand new SUV. I have a T-5R wagon (show car but I obviously don’t care about throwing my kiddo in there). I have a 2 door truck and need a small truck for things you need a truck for. Why is this so difficult to you guys.

I had zero plans on getting rid of my truck. I bought it new; I paid it off quick and I like not having a car loan. Every vehicle we own, including the new Palisade, is paid off. I could do that with the Palisade but I can’t do that with that plus a new truck. I really don’t want to daily drive a full sized truck through DC. I was looking for something that makes sense to replace the two door taco with in case I needed to throw the baby in my truck in a pinch. That’s why I figured 2023 taco (because no one who is planning on keeping vehicles as long as I keep them would get the first year of a complete redesign) and was looking on their website and was confused by some of the newer packages they were offering. That’s why I came here, for help on those new packages.

You say my truck doesn’t need to accommodate my family but I know my needs better than anyone else. We frequently travel down to North Carolina to see family and I bring my dirt bike to ride with my nephews. I will be doing the same with my child if he/she is interested in riding. We would be taking the truck then

Tell them you want to add a snorkel, drive 2 thousand miles a year, and complain it’s not a sports car and magically you’ll be embraced!

Seriously, ignore the life advice. Get you a truck if that’s what you want. I don’t understand people telling you to get a full-size when your current taco does everything you need. Talk to some dealers and tell them the specs you are looking for and see what allocations they have. Cast a wide net and you may find what you want but you better get on it quickly.

2016-2017 Tundras are cheaper than Tacomas here…

EDIT: saw you don’t want a full size.

DCLB TRD Sport sounds like the best fit for your needs as described in the thread! GL!

And if the tundra was the same size as a Tacoma, that would work. Again, I drive and park in DC.

Yea these replies are nuts. I don’t get it.

Current plan is to list my truck locally and see what offers I get and then head to the dealer and see what deals they’re doing in the next month or two to get rid of the 2023s to make room for the 2024s. I’m hoping there will be some solid deals. If not, I’ll just bank cash for the next year or two.

Go ahead and get a DCLB 2023 if that's what you want. Fullsize might be more accommodating if you want to take the whole family and also haul things. DC Tacoma would also be more accommodating than the AC.

Idk if they will do any deals since the 3rd gens are still flying off the lot. I got my 22 because I wanted a truck with the kinks worked out like you mentioned before. I think alot if people are in that boat. Now that Toyota has announced the 4th gen specs a lot of people are going to go with the 3rd gen because they don’t want a new model, turbo, or excessive tech. Good luck man.

The deals will probably be almost nonexistent, plus the intrest rates are currently not the best. I'd wait for better rates but as you know no more new 23s. 24s will be expensive, unproven, rates could be higher lower or the same plus it sounds like you don't want a 4th gen anyway. Rates might not be better, but have you considered the Frontier? Pricing might not be any better over a Tacoma, and if you rather have the Tacoma or have no intrest in the Nissan those are fine reasons for not going Frontier.

I've got a 2nd gen DCSB, I'm 6'0" tall, I have 2 kids (2 car seats), a small dog, and a dirt bike. The tacoma works fine for loading up the entire family with a dirt bike in the back. It's not super comfortable but it's tolerable to drive 2 hours at a time like that. If I were to go on a road trip I'd considering renting something bigger but even then the tacoma would work, you just have to get out and stretch your legs every now and then.

The only thing I could see being a bit of a deal breaker is having a manual when your seat is pushed forward for a car seat, mine is an auto so I don't have to worry about using the clutch. If you test drive a 2023 just be sure to put a car seat behind your seat as you may end up having a second kid. When I had my first kid, the tacoma was no problem at all, things get cramped when you have a second one, even then it totally doable.

Okay, well in the first post you did ask for suggestions, and also asked for advice on surviving having a kid, so I would actually say don't buy any new cars. The guy with the Camry kind of hit on this point too.

You said the access cab is perfect for you, and honestly I would avoid doing anything vehicle-wise right now. You'll save a ton of cash (which you need with a kid), and if you do outgrow the access cab, you can make a decision as to what you need at that time, instead of guessing now. There will still be overpriced midsize trucks around in 1-3 years, if you find you do need one.

I was asking for kid advice tongue in cheek. I was asking solely for advice on the 2023s.

Everyone’s financial situation is different; my wife and I are set up very very nicely for having a kid right now because of smart moves I made in the past, thankfully. I’m thinking I’m either going to pull the trigger on a 2023 Limited or Sport in a couple months or wait and stack cash and buy it outright in a couple years. I can make do with not fitting the whole family in my truck for a couple years as we’re getting used to the little one but will need something that can fit us all when the little one is big enough to start adventuring with us.

Who knows, maybe I’ll be comfortable with what we learn about the 2024 by the point. People said I was stupid when I was talking in groups about how I was going to order the 2015 instead of waiting a couple months for a 2016 and it was the same thing….bunch of people saying it’s going to be just as reliable and better than the 2nd gen and then I watched the shitshow unfold over the next couple years.
