Thinking of selling my 3rd Gen for a 1st Gen

    Hello TW,

As the title implies, I am thinking of the idea of selling my 2017 SR AC 4x4 4cylinder, and possibly purchasing an older 1st gen model.
I bought my truck in 2017 through Craigslist basically brand new with 1,200 miles and it was a smoking deal I could not refuse. I bought it with the idea that I would keep it forever and possibly pass it on tho my kids on day lol
I have a really small commute to work and I'm not using this truck as intended, that's why I'm thinking of purchasing a 8-12K access cab 1st Gen (doesn't have to be 4x4) with around 100K miles on it and sell my current one (which currently has 12K miles).

Would it be a tangible idea? would mileage change? Could i still keep a 1st Gen for a while?

Nice little truck you got there. Honestly id keep what you have still under warrenty probably gets decent mileage. If you can swing buy a clean 1st an you have both. What would be your use for the 1st gen just to commute? Either truck will last if you take care of them.

Honestly I would keep what you already have. The 1st gens are classic. But the one you have is a KEEPER imo. And being a 4x4 adds to it. These will be sought after later in the future. Modern interior. Decent on gas. Great looking. Rear camera. I think it’s the perfect daily driver. Maybe throw on some OR rims or PRO rims. And it’ll look really good.

If you're not using the current truck as intended, why are you looking at a truck that's almost exactly the same? Go buy a Honda Civic (being sincere here).

Love the first gen, but I cannot imagine giving up the 3rd. I would have to agree, keep the 3rd and find a reasonable 1st Gen for fun. Think you will miss some of the comforts of the newer. Also remember you have no idea how the first gen was treated by the previous owner.

No point in downgrading safety & technology wise if you're gonna do the same shit. Get a Prius/Camry/Corolla instead if you're gonna ditch the truck

Thanks for the feedback guys! I should have been more clear regarding my reason for the swap lol The reason being that I would rather have that $17k-$20K difference sitting in my bank account rather than in a depreciating vehicle. With the price that I paid for my current truck, I think I could actually make a profit out of it...

If your truck is already paid off. That’s even more of a KEEPER lol. unless your on a tight budget In life that calls for selling it . Otherwise i would keep that truck FOREVER. IMO...

Either way you cant go wrong. But you might regret selling it at some point.

Wha?? How are you getting $17-20k in difference? I'd think you'd be at $24k max Sales Price. but more realistically, $22-23k. If you're picking up a 1st Gen with 100k miles for $8-12k, then you're more like $10-12k.

And that doesn't even take into consideration the time value of hours and days of searching, baselining, risk of getting a vehicle with issues, extra time with maintenance, etc. Then of course, as mentioned above, the new truck is so much safer.

I would just keep your truck. Old trucks run so well in our daydreams. Not so much in real life.

I wonder where you might find the unicorn that you are looking for. The few first generation Tacomas that I have seen that are not completely thrashed with 300K plus are priced like gold.

I would only trade if I could find a good one with low miles and had been taken care of. Problem is the last 1st Gen rolled off the assembly line almost 15 years ago and finding one now that's not beat to hell is getting harder everyday, the few that are out there and in good shape are far and between.

    Good luck

I sold my clean 1st gen (my Avatar as it appeared when I sold it) a little over 1 yer ago and used the proceeds to buy my 3rd gen. More safety, power, and less miles (my 1st had almost 300k on it with no issues, but would be needing some large ticket updates soon as I drive a lot offroad in the desert summers here). I loved that truck, it was good for my family too, but the update was a good choice.

Yeah I paid the truck cash, but you guys are right, I don't think it'd be worth the trouble of getting an older one.

Unpopular opinion but I was in a similar boat as you OP. Truck was too nice for me, I felt bad beating it up, and I was approaching 60k miles on my 2016. Safety features would be the only reason to keep the truck IMO.

There are still some low mileage 1st gens out there in great condition. Mine was single owner with 106k miles, zero rust. I don’t regret my decision going from a 2016 to a ‘95 one bit. I can always go to the dealership tomorrow and get another third gen. Everyone and their sister drives one now.
