Honestly your black 3rd gen sr is alot better looking than a 1st gen. Gen 1s are getting too old, its hard to find one thats not all messed up by the owner with 200k -300k miles and them wanting like 15-20k$ for it.

I'm sure. They are very popular. Now imagine what they go for in desirable condition in an environment where they have virtually been gone for years.

It doesn't matter anyways. I think OP is off on his numbers. No way your clearing 17-20k making the move anyways.

You're going to regret getting into an older truck. Not worth the trade off. Keep your truck forever man.

No, they aren’t. Anything below 120k miles is outrageously priced. Usually well above 10k.

you'd be a damn fool to trade back to a 1st gen at this point. You have a known entity you already paid for, if you couldn't afford it, it might me different. But, if you buy a 1st gen now you'd likely have to put money into it...and keep putting money into it. The smart money at this point is to take good care of the 3rd gen you have, make sure it doesn't get cancer (rust) and keep it for another 15-20 years doing only basic maintenance. THAT is where the tacoma pays you back, the long run!

Totally not true. The new truck is barely more complex, it might even be simplier as the On Board Diagnostics improve. It just has a plastic cover over the engine to scare the layman. Nearly everything on the new truck is serviceable at home if that is your preference.

I guess south Texas doesn’t advertise these great deals on cars.com. I have a search setup nationwide but sorted by distance and NOTHING is popping up from down there. I’m only looking at 2003-2004 < 120k miles on the search.

Texas is a weird market. Good 1st and 2nd gen trucks are hard to come by. People keep them.

Not if you don't want to mess with your warranty. I had to go to the dealership 3 times just to get them to recalibrate my BSM sensors. Once I was out of warranty that was going to come out of my pocket. I was at the dealership probably a dozen times in the 2 and a half years I owned my truck for leaking diff gasket, hard shifts/TC issues, sensor recalls. The nice thing about the 1st gen is the 20+ years of information that's available.

"The new truck is barely more complex" seems like a joke. Talk to OVTune about the ECU shift/throttle mapping and see where the complexity lies. The truck is a computer now. The ECU links so many subsystems that the smallest issue can screw you. Bad crankshaft position sensors left several members stranded on the highway, ABS is a nuisance, and the throttle by wire in the 3rd gens leads to a dead pedal feel constantly.

I respect your opinion, but it seems like a lot of people are chiming in who haven't owned either. I've owned both, and like I said my 1st gen was 32k cheaper than my 3rd gen, and a better truck IMO, but I value simplicity. I know I'm the minority.

Agreed, I’ve done everything to my truck, maintenance, all fluids, front slim bumper, winch, rear bumper, shocks, coils, AAL, ECGS bushing, diff breather, and a lot of stuff in the bed that’s real easy.

All in my garage haven’t paid any labor except my cooper tires because I don’t have a tire machine.

I’ve got a ‘17 and MT so no problems with silly sensors or shifting.

But I did pretty much the same work to my 1st gen, too. They also had issues and recalls, ball joints replaced recall and one other I can’t think of now. The drivetrain noise and terrible V6 gas mileage were other issues. It was a good first truck, but the 1st Gens are minis

Didn't know 1st gens had a distributor and points instead of a cps to fail like 3rds.
    Abs a nuisance ? Really ?
Get a Model T Ford. 100 years of info, and no abs ! Best thing ever.

Wow. What a unicorn. I had basically the same truck except mine was a TRD and sold it in 2008 for $16k and thought I found a sucker. I do miss it, but not sure if I could go back to it with the limited features. I have become fond of things like steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, steering wheel controls, push button start, etc.

I never understood the argument that “old cars cost more because of repairs.” Sure it can still be expensive, but $25k+ for a newer truck isn’t exactly cheap. Ultimately boils down to what you want and what you’re willing to spend. I just think it’s silly when people feel they are making a good investment when they buy a new vehicle.

Like others have said though, maybe you should look at something other than a truck if you’re not using it as a truck. Plenty of affordable daily drivers out there. Nothing beats a taco though. :D

And I respect yours. I get your points, but I also think you are exaggerating. You are definitely in the minority of owners if you were in the dealer 12 times in 2.5 years, you are approaching lemon status. Most people are only in for planned maintenance. My neighbor has a 3rd gen and loves it. No problems in 2 years so far. Another buddy as a 3rd gen with the stick shift after reading some of the shifting complaints from auto owners, no issues.

    A few points:

    1) Your warranty is not effected by you working on you own vehicle. This is a very tired falsehood being perpetuated on automotive forums and by shady car salesmen / service managers.
    2) True you probably need to use the dealer for the BSM re-cal. Generally these kinds of issues can be resolved in the warranty period and the vast majority of people are not experiencing this problem. It's not clear if the OPs rig even has that option. It's looks like a more basic model.
    3) Recalls are free for life, buy yes it's a hassle to bring it in.
    4) Even the old trucks had crankshaft sensors, they can and do fail on any vehicle.
    5) Really with the ABS?
    6) Throttle by wire has been the standard for quite a while...you not liking it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. Personally, I think the 3rd gen is underpowered so maybe that is why the pedal feels dead. They are tuning the ecu/shift points for fuel economy, so yeah it's a bit finicky, as are most new vehicles. It's almost certainly better in manual transmission trim if you don't mind rowing the gears.

It's true I don't have a 3rd gen, but I've had the original Toyota pickup and now a 2nd gen, driven several 3rd gens. I'd never go back to a first gen. They are too small, not very safe, and unrefined. I had plenty of repairs and maintenance needed on the old pickup. I've done almost nothing on the 2nd gen in 10 years. A better argument could be made for the 2nd gen being the best compromise. I'm glad you like your 1st gen, but it's not for everyone.

    Have a good one!

Throttle by wire has been in the Tacoma since around 2003.

And ABS has been in most Taco's since the beginning.

I get a kick out of people comparing cost of new vs 15 year old vehicles. Compare MSRP. And using NPV. Today's trucks are the same, if not cheaper than the 1st Gens.

This is the truth. My dad paid $30K CDN for a 4Runner in 1990. That’s the equivalent of $90K CDN or something these days.

My brother spent almost a year looking for a solid 1st Gen for his 16 year old driver. Literally nothing, he gave up. Pictures would get you excited, go see it, pile of junk. They may be out there, but they are truly like finding a needle in a haystack.
