If you mean 2500-3k revs on big long hills to maintain 55-60 mph, yeah. I don't considered that too high.

Push the go pedal harder for a bit. Costs nothing, you may be happier knowing that it can move better than you think.

OP, if you can find one that you'll be happy with, get the 6. my first truck was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away and it came with a blistering 67bhp at the crank brand new with a 5 speed MT so I hear ya. No amount of high rev was gonna do anything to help, it just made things louder. Going up a hill always meant get out of the way of the regular ppl and move over to the right lane with the big rigs. And hope the thing doesn't overheat.

I'm sure the 2.7 puts out way more but anything that doesn't have enough power for normal everyday driving just isn't any fun. It's frustrating at times. Driving should be fun. Get a 6 and enjoy.

I test drove the 2.7 for 2 miles, turned around and back to the dealer bought the V6.

While I never got to test drive a new v6 access cab when looking for tacomas, just an access cab sr 4 cylinder with an auto. When I finally got my 2020 sr5 v6 , and drove it 160 miles to my home it was very noticeable the power difference with this v6 vs remembering that I4 I test drove....like night vs day.

The V6 is more powerful, but you are right- this is a fairly big, heavy, and aero unfriendly truck, so even the V6 needs it's neck wrung on the highway. If the constant shifting and gas peddle input is going to drive you nuts, I fear it will still be there with the V6. Test drive multiple times, and long rides before you trade in.

I like my V6, I am not in the anti crowd. That said, it does drive different, but this is common of today's vehicles tuned and geared for max fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

I have a 2.7 and my friend has a v6. theres not that much of a difference in terms of power..its still a sluggish v6 that will make you want more just like the 2.7. The 2.7 is made to rev high, its power curve doesnt peak until after 3000rpm. LCE headers for the 2.7 have made gear hunting and consistancy way better for higheay driving on my 2.7, wish I had the tune to add to it. the 2.7 access cab is more nimble and "sporty" then a v6 double cab. the 2.7 is slightly more reliable then the v6. I get no less then 20-22mpg normal to slighty agressive driving and 23-26mpg when im driving like a prius on flatter roads at 40-55mph. I got 32 inch ko2's too. just throwing out all this information to you so you have more to think about. the biggest difference between the 2.7 and any other more powerful engine is that with the 2.7 you have to be somewhat of a better driver because youre working with less power. A bigger engine does all the thinking for you. if power is your main need, dont even think about getting a tacoma. and as others have said a regear is something to think about too unless its cheaper to get a v6. btw, how much did you pay for the tune? i'm itching to get one so i can report back on it.

159hp N/A 4 banger is not in the same league as a 270hp V6. No replacement for displacement

there is in terms of weight but i get your point. the v6 double cab models are significanlty heavier then the lighter 2.7 access cabs 2wd. if we were at a track my 2.7 would spank your v6 easy.

It’s a truck. You want to trailer anything, get a 8cyl. I had the 2nd gen 6 and it was fun but still hunts for gears. I now have the 4. (2.7). Yes it hunts too. I like my 3rd gen 4 cyl. If I want something bigger it would be a tundra.

    No, it wouldn't lol.

You must be the first to post here stating you don't see a difference from the 4cy to the 6cyl. Its literally night and day difference. Our company went from 2.7 single cab 2nd gens to 3.5 double cab 3rd gens. Even with the significant weight increase the 6 cyl is way more powerful and quicker.

David, hang on. Please try these ignition coils E58FE524-2FB8-4750-9292-8966C54CD54F.jpg before you do something stupid. They are like $70 ea. and they’ve turned my truck into a Monster. We’ve got to get that smile back onto your face

I've had a bunch of trucks (no diesels) and come to think of it, have never had one that felt adequetely powered on the hwy. Always shined better going slow. '70 Ferd SWB with a 240 I6, '78 Cheby with a 350, '92 Dodge with a 318. All slow dogs. Those were the ones I kept long term.
That's leaving out all the mini trucks that were just made/bought for mileage and didn't expect much.

Have you tried using S-mode exclusively when needing more control over RPM's and performance?
