Thinking of Trading for Ram 1500 Diesel. Talk me out of it? Into it?

Thinking of betraying the Tacoma gods.

The 2014 RAM 1500 3.0L diesel looks mighty inviting. Going to test drive of course as soon as one arrives at my dealer.

But assuming I don't hate anything about it on the test drive, I find it mighty hard to talk myself out of it. 420 lbs/ft of torque and 27 mpg highway is a hard deal to walk away from.

Stupid idea? Will I miss the Tacoma? Or has the era of the Tacoma drawn to a close?

I see you have a manual Tacoma. That right there would do it for me. I'm 99% sure that all Ram 1500's are automatic now. Plus I can only imagine the price tag...

That being said, my neighbor (A career mechanic) just bought a 2012 Ram 1500 4x4 and gets about 22 mpg avg. That is impressive, I will admit. Rams are definitely a lot nice than they used to be.

Ha yeah sorry about that. Mods can delete that one. I posted that, then realized the question I SHOULD be asking is whether trading up is worth it. Plus that discussion area doesn't get as much traffic as here :p

DO IT!!!!! If I was in the market for a new truck, a tacoma definitely wouldn't be in the top of the list in today's truck market. Seems like every full size truck gets better mpg's then the tacoma.

That's a great point. I will probably miss driving manual, I'm sure. My last truck was auto and it was kinda blah. So I'm sure going to the RAM will be going back to "blah" a little bit. But maybe all that torque will make up for it...

I dont care who says they get what, a 2012 ram V8 4x4 is good for about 16mpg. Friend of mine has one and says 20 may happen on a good day with a tail wind, and he has the motor that changes how many cylinders run also. 2012 eco boost Ford gets pretty good right up until you put a load on it. Our company truck gets about 10mpg with a trailer on it.

Dont like Dodge. Never have. Never will. just a personal preferance. I picked toyota for basically all of the reasons why people get on this forum and enjoy toyota trucks. I work at a diesel truck shop myself, and there are a lot of good diesels out there. I have an old ford with a 7.3 and its great, but i wouldnt get rid of my toyota just for a new dodge diesel. I enjoy the offroad capability and size of my tacoma over a bigger truck.

This may seem silly and just my impression of drivers of Ram trucks but.....
Have you ever noticed that people driving these trucks seem small behind the wheel? I don't know if because of the size of the truck makes the driver seem small or just short people drive them. Maybe they should be sitting on a phone book. :D

It really boils down to what your purpose for the switch? I would say yes if you are plan on doing alot of hauling or need more room for passengers. Other than that, I don't see the advantage of having higher payments, maybe worse gas mileage, and having to park a larger truck.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
Claimed. What does fuelly say? no seriously i dont know. But i have a friend that swears he gets 26mpg in his avalanche (probably spelled wrong) the chevy ridgeline :)

I doubt it. The tundra has "401" ft lbs or whatever, and its quick but without a load the auto in it makes it feel less powerful than the 6spd taco.. Or maybe i just mean less direct. Either way the tundra sitting in my driveway now is a turd, with an auto, that gets horrid MPG.

I agree, and with the taco i dont do much better towing.. but then its also not sold as magical and game changing voodoo

good news then ;) its not a dodge anymore, RAM didn't even like thier own company so they left it behind.. LOL

I actually saw one, i like how they made it smaller. I also like how the interior is NICE looking, and the body lines aren't to bad.

actually i saw a 2014 GMC seirra, is it still the same truck sold by chevy?

Whatever you do, I hope they sell a good number of them. That way we might start to get some more options here.
There were three vehicles I saw in my last overseas trip that I'd love to get my hands on. All three had diesels.
    VW Amarok
    Ford Ranger
    Wrangler

That plus I don't see Ford sitting on the sidelines too long if the Ram starts pulling away in sales due to a diesel option.

I "heard" Nissan is also coming out with a diesel but no sure which year.

I wouldn't buy one right away. The last Chrysler diesel wasn't all that impressive. I'd wait a bit and see how they do before buying one. I'm stoked about the half ton diesel but if it's got a lot of mechanical issues when it first hits the showrooms, I wouldn't want to be part of the 'test group'.

You can only convince yourself, not us to convince you. You're on a Tacoma board, not a "I might want a Dodge and convince me not to do it" board. Pfff!

This is almost as bad as not using your headrests thread.

Although the new dodges look nice, it's still a dodge!
