Thinking of trading in my 18 Taco for a full-size

OP, of you only care for tech then the decision has already been made for you. Go ram. The rebel is the best looking truck period as far as I'm concerned.

If you want to make somewhat of a financial decision, then Toyota. Depreciation is a killer.

Might even want to wait a few months for the 2020 to comes out with some of the tech you need, then again in a couple years trade in when more tech shows up. 2 Toyota trades will be about the same cost as a single Ram trade...
Take that last point worth a grain of salt. Toyota tops the resale, I can't actually find Ram on the top lists to compare numbers...

I just traded my '19 DCLB TRD Sport 4WD in on a new '18 GMC Denali 4WD with the 6.2 and love it. Gas mileage is better than the Tacoma (23+ mpg on the open road and no less than 17 combined around town) and the ride is superb. I wanted power at my disposal and for my vehicle to not have to try so hard to keep momentum and this truck does that. The only downside is it's bigger (I bought the Tacoma because I didn't really want a full sized truck) and it lacks some of the nice safety features the Toyota offers, as well as the radar cruise. I don't love the column shifter or the lack of keyless start but it's all a trade-off. The '19 GM trucks do have push button start but still no radar cruise. I do not like the large tailgate on the new body GM trucks so getting a deeply discounted '18 was perfect and allowed me to offset some of the trade-in beating I took on the Tacoma.

I installed the factory OEM Borla exhaust and replaced the giant chrome grille with the painted surround, grille and black emblem from a Sierra Elevation package and think it looks great. The factory Denali grille was just toooo much chrome for my taste.

 

Only full size I'd go aside from a Tundra is a Ram. My mom has a 2500 Diesel and I love driving that thing.

 

I like the Rebel. I hate the red trim interior that cannot be avoided. It was a deal killer for me.

To be honest, I’m still trying to figure it out.

There are many things I really like about my Tacoma: a feeling of solidity, competent rear locker, nice interior design, comfortable ride. But it has several irritants that baffle me considering most other automakers resolved them years ago, like an automatic transmission that shifts quickly and smoothly, a seat that is comfortable, absence of weird driveline vibrations, a hill assist that behaves in a predictable manner, etc.

Overall, I’d give my Tacoma a 7.5 out of a possible 10. Not horrible by any means, but I guess I was expecting more.

 

That's right about where I'd put it as well. The "out of breath" feeling on the open road and the annoying vibrations just detracted so much from the experience for me that I couldn't enjoy the truck. It was like Chinese water torture in that I was constantly reminded of the things I hated about it and they ultimately overpowered the good stuff. And it's not like it was the price we pay for great fuel economy. My 6.2 GMC does better by several mpg. Go figure.

A year ago I looked at a new 2018 GMC Sierra SLT Crew Cab 4x4. It was loaded, offered plenty of room for six people, a 5.3 V8, power everything, etc. Sticker was $56,000; they were letting them go for $38,000. It offered a very tempting value: purchase price and the EPA MPG were about the same as that on my Tacoma.

In the end, I off-road, don’t tow and the GMC didn’t fit in my garage, so the Tacoma made more sense.

 

Can confirm. I went from a 18 Tacoma to a 2500 Cummins 4x4. Really enjoy driving again and using cruise control when I want.

I kinda want a full size after having my tacoma for 6 months or so but I know they wont fit in my garage and I reallllly enjoy the small profile on the truck.

I have a pilot and a honda accord. Pretty sure Im gonna get rid of the pilot and get a 4runner and I think that will give me what Im looking for.

 

Another very happy F150 owner here, and I drive in a lot of mountainous roads, as well as interstate. I have a 2019 3.5EB and I'm getting about 21MPG on average combined, and 23MPG on longer trips. Another thing to note is the 3.5EB SuperCrews get the bigger axle, not the 8.8.

 

4Runners are slow with a capital S. Climbing hills will make you want to poke holes in the floor and do the Fred Flintsone. Make sure you know what you're getting into or you might find yourself in the same boat as I was with the Tacoma.

 

im in texas so super flat. My mom has one and I really have enjoyed it and the space. I really hate the pilot and dont want a tahoe or anything big either.

You got that right. Someone needs to come in with a midsized truck/SUV that has 350hp and gets 22mpg and they'd corner the market.

 

Just judging form your posts, it really sounds to me like you’re not happy with it. If I were you I’d trade it in now while the resale is at its peak and get something that puts a smile on my face instead of making me complain about how it could be better.

IMHO, sooner or later you’re going to realize you’d be happier with another vehicle and wish you’d done it sooner for that very reason.

I really wanted a Jeep Gladiator when I first heard about them. Was all set to trade in my ‘08 Tundra for one before I came to my senses and bought my Taco instead. Best move I ever made.

I keep my vehicles for a very long time. If I was one of those guys who trades in every two years for a new vehicle I might be tempted to go domestic too - then again I might not. But we all like what we like so...

 

It does use an IRS but the center section is the same for all 8.8 (86-14) and super 8.8s (15+). The weaker version of the solid axle (non-super) 8.8 was used in the 13/14 GT500 that made 662 hp and 631 ft lbs.

 

Yup. I might wait out the 4runner at least until the new one comes out. The pilot is ok its just so bland. Its a minivan really, I dont really need the thirdrow and could use the space. It folds down but its shitty. I have 2 kids, might have 1 more but 4 is 100% out of the question.

Go to the beach quite a bit so 4runner would handle it nicely and the tacomas ok with us 4, with 5 would be too tight i think, I still need a bed though so the tacoma is fine for what I do.

 

Having just traded in a 3 month old '19 TRD Sport DCLB 4WD, I disagree somewhat. I think the trade-in value (and the private offers) I got at 3 months is the same value I would have gotten a year in with 12K on the ticker instead of 3K. In essence, I probably could have gotten some free time and mileage. But I wanted out NOW.

The reality is that most folks would rather buy a brand new truck than buy your 3 month old truck if the only difference is they save $3K on the used one. And that sales tax you paid? It's gone. So you might as well keep the truck a year and get some value out of it and then dump it.
