So, I've had my Taco for 10 years now. I use it as a truck about twice a year. It's been great. Thinking about getting a new T4R. Anyone experience the newer T4R? What do you think about them?

    Still thinking about it.
I experienced the window sticker and decided it’s not for me!! Nice rigs though.

Yeah they are pricey. About 40k for what I would want. Hard to justify on the mechanical stand point. Pretty much a 2nd gen tacoma that look like a suv. Lol

We have a 2016 and absolutely love it. Rides better than my Tacoma.

We have a 2019 SR5 and it has been great. Ours was about $31k. Same engine as the 2nd gen Tacoma with a couple of minor changes (such as the oil filter). I enjoy driving my Tacoma a little more, but that's not really a fair comparison.

I'd say go for it, made in Japan, the trd has an actual mechanical transfer case lever. Fully boxed frame, shorter wheel base

A manual transfer case sounds awfully exciting.

Yes. It is similar to the 3rd gen Tacoma with a cartridge filter no longer located on top of the engine.

Also, the SR5 does not have a manual transfer case lever. I'm not sure if the TRD versions are manual or not since they are located in the same place and move pretty easily. Doesn't make much sense to make the cheaper trim level have a computer actuated one and the higher level have a manual one. But, don't quote me on that.

It is a true manual and not just a lever attached to a computer?

Owned a 2018 TRD Off Road Premium for about 9 months. It was a fantastic truck and felt largely unkillable, but the engine and transmission absolutely felt dated. So did the tech, but that's part of the reason why I bought the truck... didn't want any headaches or things to go wrong. The thing I liked least was the suspension and brake dive. Overall it was a great truck for daily use and I know would have been great on the trails as well (long-term plan was to sell the V6 4th gen I had at the time and modify the 5th gen but my life changed and I sold both). It was comfortable, roomy, good on the highway, got 19-21 MPG depending on which route I took on my commute, and ate up road trip miles with ease. Had zero bugs whatsoever during my ownership (zero as in literally nothing went wrong). Resale was killer, too. Mine had every option except KDSS and stickered at $41.5k or so, I bought it new for $36.5k and sold it for what I paid for it with about 22k miles on the clock.

I loved that thing but some life changes happened quickly so I sold it in a flurry along with that 4th gen. If I buy another 4Runner down the line it'll definitely be another 5th gen, but probably with a supercharger.

Yep! Even feel the transfer case road vibrations when driving with your hand on the lever.

Well can't find one that a dealer is willing to negotiate on.

None will. The thing is they can hardly keep new units on the lot (in CA) and the used units sell faster. All you can do is try and find a place that just got one in and hope they haven't done the bullshit certification, 3m door edge cover and anti theft paint etch. If they have not done it yet you can save from $3,500-$6,000 pending dealer and state. THEN, don't go for the usual $2,500-$4,000 in house warranty and you can save $6 to 10k. I just helped two family members buy vehicles in the passed week.

Just helped my sister get a trd off road last week. $3500 off msrp at Santa Rosa through Costco. Got $3700 off at one of the Arizona dealers.

Socal dealers were bragging in their replies to my emails that they were selling theirs for over msrp. So save your time there and skip socal dealers.

Yeah it's crazy they won't make contact when I send the inquiry for one. Found one. ORP they wanted MSRP and sign over the rebates. Lol

Especially being in Hawaii where your choices are limited, I'm sure dealers can pull anything and still get sales.
Have you considered shipping from California? The $3500 off I got was from Norcal. You'll get another $500 for military from Toyota too.

I have a 2021 4Runner off road premium. It has a manual xfer case. Led low and fogs, electric seats, some materthat is not leather but easy to clean. Very soft ride but depends on tires a lot. Rear locker. I love it.

it’s not luxurious of course. It’s a truck. I traded in a extremely comfortable highlander limited platinum for it. I wanted to go on trails. I go every single week. It drives much worse than the highlander. I still love it. It’s much rolling and diving in turns and braking. I still love it. It only has 5 gears and a OD that is not a gear. It’s a dog compared to my highlander. I still love it.

But I use it for what it’s designed for. Every week. It’s filthy covered with mud most of the time. It’s a month old with a shit load of scratches already. But it does trails extremely well. It’s not a jeep. But close.

I’d say think what you honestly will do with it. Get the right vehicle. If you want comfort and just do dirt and 8.5 inches of clearance is enough, highlander type cars work well. If you will tow ... or do real trails that have ratings and not just dirt roads ...

I’d say Toyota has been extremely reliable for me. I drove the crap out of both. I do nonstop 1200 trips and even sleep hours with the engine on. Almost 24 hours non stop. And I also neglected oil changes on the previous vehicle and zero problems. No/low recalls also for Toyota.

But you know what you’ll really do with it! A 4Runner will be a step up most likely compared to a rough riding truck.
